I encourage each of you to make it your priority on attending the monthly Business Breakfast. Why? Because it’s an opportunity to put your face, name and business in front of approximately 70 other local business owners. We live by a slogan here of Buy Local or Bye Bye Local!
The breakfast is held on the last Thursday of every month except December. The event is held at Harold’s Corral in Cave Creek. The Business Breakfast will have a new start time of 7:30 AM starting on September 28. Why the time change? It’s because of the amazing networking that is happening at this event! With an average of 65-70 businesses represented at this breakfast we need a few more minutes to introduce ourselves to each other and learn how we can be a great referral source for them too.
Also during our breakfast meeting we have some great topics lined up for you in the coming months. They include topics like How to protect Myself and My Business from Fraud, Cyber Security, Making Hard Decisions in my Business, Non-Profit Expo and more!
I hope to see you on Thursday September 28 at 7:30 AM at Harold’s Corral.

What is Kiwanis ?
Kiwanis is a service club whose mission is to serve the children in the community by sponsoring AKTION Club (community service for young adults with special needs), Key Club (service leadership organization for teens that teaches leadership through service to others), scholarships ($50,000 awarded in 2016), Science Fairs and other Science and Engineering related education activities and Terrific Kids & BUG programs. They are able to sponsor these activities through fundraising at their Bi-Annual Pancake Breakfast, sales through the Marketplace re-sale store and through generous donations from community and club members.

What's in it for you to become a member of Kiwanis?
Fellowship and fun: Kiwanis members don't just do service-they have fun. Members make new friends by being part of the club where they attend meetings and participate in social events. Our local Kiwanis club also provides excellent networking opportunities for professionals. Members meet new people from all over their community through service projects, fundraising and by attending the weekly meeting.

The Kiwanis Marketplace is located just across the street from Dairy Queen at:
6535 East Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek, AZ 85331

The prehistoric Hohokam are known for their extensive canals in the Phoenix Basin. They are also known for their kiln-fired ceramic pottery and their legacy of pecked-petroglyphs found and appreciated valley wide. Many are unaware the Hohokam were proficient at jewelry-making using shells from the Gulf of California. Historian Rose Houk states, “…the craft took on aspects of an industry… the exquisitely finished pieces were exported to…neighbors- the Anasazi [now Ancestral Puebloans], Mogollon, and Sinagua…so widespread was the trade…the Hohokam are regarded as shell merchants.” The Hohokam made a 400-mile, round-trip-journey on foot collecting their favorite shell, the Glycymeris, a bivalve clam. Archaeologist Ronald Beckwith states Hohokam used no fewer than sixty-two species of marine shells for their jewelry.

Mayor Les Peterson, Town of Carefree August 2017
Carefree’s Long Term Financial Strategy Updated
Periodically, every municipality needs to review its source of funding, assess the situation in which it is operating, evaluate what activities and programs have been working the most efficiently, and make revenue and expenditure projections for future years. This evaluation soon becomes a blue print of the future Long Term Financial Plan for that community, impacting income and expenditure decisions for the next five to ten years.
Carefree developed a Long Term Financial Plan in 2003 and later updated it in 2012. Due to recent changes in income projections, accentuated by legislative changes, we are currently in the process of updating it again for upcoming years.
A joint workshop of the Carefree Town Council and Planning and Zoning Commission was held on Monday, August 14, 2017. During this meeting the Carefree Long Range Financial Planning Group presented and discussed the data and recommendation they had developed, and provided additional thinking regarding downtown and existing development plans, land use, revitalization, additional commercial uses, and sales tax among other financial strategies.
The Carefree Long Range Financial Planning Committee consists of 10 members which included Carefree Town Council members (Les Peterson, John Crane and Michael Krahe), Carefree Town Staff members (Gary Neiss and Jim Keen), and residents (Stephen Hatcher, Gary Hayward, Leslie Hine, John Traynor and Jerry Wetta). The members believe this plan to be the most appropriate for Carefree to pursue over the upcoming five to ten years.
Members of the Committee would also be pleased to present and discuss this work with retailer groups, and HOA and other groups with a minimum of 20 attendees. Presentations last 2 – 2 ½ hours, so please plan accordingly. Please contact Les Peterson at mayor@carefree.org or call the Town Office at 480.488.3686 to make an appointment. A copy of the Presentation can be found on the Carefree Town website at www.carefree.org.
