New Look for the Lobby Unveiled

Members of the Class of 2017 performed a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the refurbished front lobby on August 23. The improvements were funded by their parents as part of their eighth grade gift. The graduates gathered after the ribbon cutting for a reunion barbecue with family and faculty members before heading off to their new schools this fall.

DCD Handbook
Click here for a draft of the DCD Handbook. Please review your information and contact Leslie Bowen, [email protected], with any changes or corrections by Friday, September 8. Printed copies will be mailed to families on September 25.
Important Carpool Reminders
Drivers to campus are asked to please pay attention to the guidelines for carpool drop off and pick up outlined in the Handbook on pages 12 and 46-47. If your child is riding in a regularly established carpool, please give the names of the drivers and the schedule to your child's homeroom teacher or advisor at the beginning of the year.
  • Please use the main entrance to the campus off Sandy Valley Road, unless you are only going to pre-k; only those drivers going directly to pre-k at Huntington House may use the Highland Street entrance
  • If you have a pre-k child and an older child, drop off/pick up students at the main building first (kindergarten, lower school, and middle school), before heading to Huntington House via the upper parking lot to drop off/pick up pre-k students
  • Children should exit the sidewalk side of the car
  • Cell phone use is prohibited during carpool
  • All school driveways are one way
And, be sure to join Head of School Allison Webster at one of the "carpool coffees" out in front of the school on Wednesday and Thursday starting at 7:45 a.m. through the end of carpool.

News from the Summer
Eclipse on Campus
Whoever happened to be on campus on August 21 ventured outside to view the eclipse together with special glasses. Science teacher Signe Pereira was on hand to offer an additional safe way of viewing the eclipse by projecting it onto paper using binoculars.

It was a bonding experience for all who participated in the historic event and a chance to learn about science first hand.
DCD Helps to Beautify Dedham Center
If you've been to Dedham Center recently you may have noticed the planter outside CVS sponsored by DCD. The planter is part of Dedham Civic Pride's efforts to improve the appearance of the town's neighborhoods with landscaping, tree-planting, and planters. The projects of Dedham Civic Pride are made possible by the support of town businesses, organizations, and residents. The DCD-sponsored planter is one of 60 throughout the town.

Summer Construction
In addition to the lobby project, many other areas of the DCD campus experienced improvements this summer, including the repaving of the main driveway and sidewalks for the start of school.

Class of 2013 Returns to Campus
Members of the class of 2013 returned to campus for a reunion on August 15, gathering with classmates, faculty, and families before heading off to their next adventures in the fall.
Horizons Reaches Important Milestone
This year marked the return of Executive Director Meredith Laban to the Horizons at DCD program as well as the graduation of its first class of eighth graders. Horizons at DCD offers a tuition-free academic enrichment summer program to students of low-income families from neighborhoods in Boston and Dedham. Meredith started the program on the DCD campus in 2009 and helped it grow to where it now serves 150 students in pre-k through grade 8. Click here for the article that appeared this summer in the Dedham Transcript.
