Mayor Dan Pope will kick-off the Mayor's Fitness Council initiative during a news conference on Wednesday, September 6. The event will take place at Roscoe Wilson Elementary School, 2807 25th Street, and it will start at 8:30 a.m.

The Mayor's Fitness Council aims to bring together key community stakeholders and city leaders, as well as local individuals and youth, organizations, agencies, churches, and businesses that share the vision of a healthier community. The group will focus on two primary goals: endorsement of local fitness and wellness events that support the Fitness Council's mission and establishment of a signature event to promote and unify Lubbock's health and wellness organizations.

The Fitness Council initiative is a collaborative effort between the City of Lubbock and Healthy Lubbock, a program of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Garrison Institute on Aging. It includes members from Texas Tech University, local hospitals, schools, health organizations and registered dietitians.

The Mayor's Fitness Council was developed from Imagine Lubbock Together's (ILT) health initiative. ILT teamed with Healthy Lubbock to improve the overall health of the community and the quality of life of individuals.
