September is here and we can hardly contain our excitement for all the wonderful things of Autumn that are right around the corner... colorful leaves, pumpkin spice and, of course, the
Ohio Valley Region Convention!
Advanced registration will be open until Wednesday, September 20, so it's STILL NOT TOO LATE to join us in Indianapolis, September 27-29. Ballot for AIA KY 2018 Officers
The ballot containing AIA Kentucky's slate of officers for 2018 was distributed via email to all current members on August 28. Responses must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, so be sure to cast your vote ASAP.
AIA Kentucky members will ratify the election results at the 2017 AIA Kentucky Annual Meeting, which is scheduled for Friday, September 29, 2017 from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. at the Crowne Plaza Union Station in Indianapolis, during the AIA Ohio Valley Region Convention. We hope to see you there!

Energy Code Repeals
In early August, AIA Kentucky learned of a proposal made to Kentucky's HBC Code Advisory Committee to roll our state's commercial energy code back to the previous version of the IECC. As professionals who are committed to minimizing building energy consumption, we are opposed to this recommendation and we notified HBC Commissioner, Steve A. Milby of our position in our
August 28 letter to his office.
Similar challenges are occurring at the Federal level. On August 8, 2017 AIA CEO
Robert Ivy, FAIA sent a letter to the Senate's Committee on Energy and Natural Resources outlining concerns the AIA has with language in S. 1460. The recently introduced Energy and Natural Resources Act of 2017 aims to repeal targets for the reduction of emissions from federal buildings and contains language that could negatively impact the codes development process.

Architectural Artists Directory
The Kentucky Arts Council is accepting applications for the Architectural Artists Directory through Sept. 15. Participation in the directory is intended for artists whose work is constructed as an integral part of a room, building, outdoor space or other structure. Artists in the directory are frequently sought by architects or people who are building homes or business owners who want to add creative elements to the overall design of their spaces.
Beautify the Bluegrass
Gov. Matt Bevin launched his new "Beautify the Bluegrass" initiative on August 25, calling on Kentuckians to come together to make their hometowns shine. "I want to encourage people in every Kentucky community to figure how out they can become the most beautiful community in the Commonwealth," said Gov. Bevin. "The concept is simple: Identify a problem that needs attention, and then find a way to get involved in repairing, enhancing or beautifying it."
Gov. Bevin invites citizens to form volunteer teams and set to work improving the aesthetics of a neglected area of their town. Projects can include removing litter, mowing, landscaping or other visual improvements. The winning team will be notified in October, and Gov. Bevin and Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton will host a catered barbecue for up to 200 team members in that community.

Continuing Education
AIA Long Beach/South Bay is offering a 5-hour accessibility seminar via LIVE WEBINAR so that members and non-members across the country can attend. The seminar, titled "Stepping Thru Accessible Public Multi-Family Residential Facilities", will be presented by Janis Kent, FAIA, of CASp. It will be Friday, September 15, from 10 am - 3:30 pm Pacific Standard Time, with a 30-minute break for lunch or dinner. The webinar will be an interactive experience where attendees may ask questions to the speaker and there is no quiz at the end.

After departing the UK College of Design in 1996, José R. Oubrerie returns this fall to serve as a visiting professor in the School of Architecture to teach fourth-year studio. From 1989-1991, Oubrerie served as the dean of the College of Design as well as a professor of architecture from 1984-86. Oubrerie is the last living protégé of Le Corbusier, one of the pioneers of modern architecture.
In honor of his decades-long involvement in educating others in the discipline of lighting design, University of Kentucky Associate Professor of Interiors
Joseph Rey-Barreau, AIA, IES, will be inducted into the American Lighting Association's Hall of Fame at their annual conference in September. The ALA is the trade association representing the residential lighting industry in North America.

Hurricane Harvey Relief
Many of you have asked how you can help the people affected by Hurricane Harvey. AIA is coordinating with local components, agencies and other building industry organizations on response efforts.
One of the best ways to support those affected by Harvey is to donate to a trusted organization who can deliver resources to the region. Click here for more info on how you can help.

The midyear update to the
AIA's State Economic Profiles has also been released. The profiles provide a collection of economic indicators that can be used to make better business decisions. There is one for each state to better inform your understanding of policies affecting the industry.
The data demonstrates the importance of architects and the industry to society. Each profile contains national, regional, and state indicators such as employment and gross domestic product. The profiles are updated each January and July.

nomination homepage. The deadline for submissions is 5pm ET on October 9. Members must submit a resume and a letter of interest with their application. Applicants must be Architect or Associate members in good standing.

Where Do You Stand on CE for 2017?
Still considering attending the OVR Convention in Indianapolis? Don't forget, the reporting period for your Kentucky registration renewal is now January 1 to December 31 each year. So next June, you'll need have earned 12 hours HSW during calendar year 2017. And you need to earn 18 learning units (12 of which are HSW) to meet your AIA membership requirement for 2017. The Convention is a great place to earn all the credits you need ... up to 16.5 learning units/hours are available. We have four thought-provoking keynote presentations as well as a wonderfully diverse array of breakout sessions and two interesting tours. Indianapolis is a lively and vibrant city that provides the perfect backdrop for our focus on the New Urban Agenda and how architects can lead the way.

UK College of Design is hosting an alumni reception on Thursday, Sept. 28 during the convention, with Director of Architecture Jeffrey Johnson, AIA and Clyde R. Carpenter, FAIA on hand to welcome you to the rooftop patio at the offices of Odle McGuire Shook (OMS).

A really fun AfterParty is shaping up for late-night Thursday on the Georgia Street Boardwalk in downtown Indy, hosted by the Ohio Valley Emerging Professionals and Fellows and open to all convention attendees. All convention attendees are invited to this event sponsored by Acuity Brands Lighting and LIGHTsource.
