Garces Rams Play St. John Bosco

Tomorrow night, the Garces Rams take on the St. John Bosco Braves who are currently ranked 9th in the country.  It is a BIG game for the Rams.  They are playing under the lights during prime time in the Brothers in Arms Classic at Mission Viejo High School. While it is going to be a tough battle, it is a an opportunity for a great experience for our boys.  The game is will be live-streamed by NFHS so for those of you who can't make the trip to Mission Viejo, you can still watch and root for the Rams!  Or you can tune into ESPN radio 98.1 FM or 1230 AM and listen to the game on the Garces Radio Network.

GMHS Academic Decathlon Team

Garces Memorial Academic Decathlon Moderator, Mr. Anthony Bedoy, is working to form a nine person team of hard working students who thirst for knowledge! Just like a normal sports team, they will have practices, scrimmages, competitions, and ultimately: camaraderie. Like an athletic decathlon, the Academic Decathlon has ten events: art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, math, music, science, social science, and speech.

The events are split up into two groups: the individual seven objective tests (art, economics, language and literature, math, music, science and social science) the three subjective events (essay, interview and speech). In addition, there is a Super Quiz relay event where you work as a team. All of the content is a team effort and the students help each other in the learning process. Ultimately, it all pays off to work together as the Super Quiz is a team based event that is high energy!

Students will be expected to attend team practices and work on their own to prepare for our final goal: the regional competition! All students of all GPA levels and grade levels are invited to join.

The regional competition, "Kern County Competition Day", is  Saturday, February 3, 2018, from 7:30 a.m. -7:00 p.m. at Mira Monte High School.

If your student is interested in getting more information about being part of the Mock Trial Team, please have him, or her, contact Mr. Bedoy at [email protected] or visit his classroom during break or lunch.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

When this campus photograph was printed in the 1969 yearbook, no one noticed the mistake in it until after it was published.  Can you find it?

The negative was accidentally reversed when the photo was developed.  Check out the bell tower - it is on the wrong side.
Hurricane Harvey Outreach

Garces senior, Maggie Waguespack, watched the devastation as it was occurring in Texas and thought to herself "what if this was my family?".  Maggie said she knew she had to do something. She went on-line, did some research, and found St. John XXIII Catholic High School in Katy, Texas.  St. John XXIII is about the same size as Garces. Maggie and her family thought it would be a good fit for a sister school outreach project.  Maggie brought the idea to the school and Garces Memorial is proud to say we are now a sister school to St. John XXIII. As a member of the ASB class, Maggie discussed the idea of helping raise money for the victims of Hurricane Harvey who attend St. John XXIII with her ASB classmates and everyone immediately got on board. They are working on several ideas to raise funds - one will be selling free dress passes for $5.00 next week. The students know that together, as a school, they can make a difference in the lives of their fellow Catholic school students in Texas.  As a Garces Community, we all know that we can help as well.  If you would like to donate to the student's sister school project, please send money or a check payable to Garces ASB.  You can drop off donations at the front desk or mail in a donation to the school to the attention of the ASB Class. We will keep you posted on their Sister School Project of Compassion.

Student Affairs

We are back in full swing and students are beginning to hit their stride. The four-square courts are chalked in and, despite the mind melting heat, they are seeing plenty of use. The fall sports are feeling that a name change to Way-Too-Hot Sports is in order. The AC units growl in protest as they attempt to keep classrooms regulated at a temperature that allows normal brain function in spite of the heat. And somehow, I'm supposed to segue this into a brief article on HERO, our behavior tracking program. Obviously, the heat is having an impact as there really isn't a decent segue. So...HERO is up and running despite the heat.

HERO is the program that we use to track student behavior and it will allow Students and Parents access to the behavior information; however, in order to use HERO you must first create an account (please note that if you created an account last year that account is still active).
Account creation, login, and password resetting must be done at  access.heropowered.com . Once an account is created and you are logged in you must add a student to your account (you must add your student every year). Once this is done you can download the app from your app store and begin using the account on your device.

Here is a list that may help:

To register, follow these easy steps:

1. Go to access.heropowered.com

2. Select the parent or student button

3. Click "Create An Account"

4. Enter name, your email address, choose a password, 5. Click "Create user"

6. Click "Add Student"

7. Choose "No" to add your student using their ID Number, Date of Birth, and Last Name.

Download the Hero App

Once you register online, you may download the HERO app from the iTunes or Google Play stores to keep track of HERO behavior history and Hero point balances.

If you have any issues please let me know.

Hoping for cool days!

FBI Teen Academy

This November, the FBI Sacramento field office is offering students an insight into law enforcement agency as a part of the FBI Teen Academy.

The one-day academy offers students a unique view into the FBI and its mission, values, investigations, partnerships with local, state and federal law enforcement, eligibility requirements, many career available paths, and more.

Throughout the day, participants engage in activities and discussions with FBI personnel. Discussion topics include cyber safety, terrorism, active shooter situations, cyber investigations, and civil rights investigations.

Students will also engage in candid conversations about online communication and its risks as well as the lifestyle choices required to be eligible for careers at the FBI.

More than 350 students have attended the FBI Teen Academy at the FBI Sacramento field office to date.

An application package is currently available online for the Fall 2017 class that will be held on November 17 at the FBI Sacramento field office headquarters in Roseville.

All students interested in attending the FBI Teen Academy must complete an application package as instructed to compete for this opportunity.

A completed package includes an application, forms with original signatures from educators and parents, and a supporting essay.

Only complete application packages received by the October 12 deadline, by mail or hand delivery will be considered for this opportunity.
