Anushka Khanna Earns Gold Award

Anushka Khanna, a 2017 graduate of Hillsborough High School and a member of Girl Scout Troop 60045, was recently honored by the Mayor and Township Committee for earning her Gold Award.
For her Gold Award project, "Sensory Friendly Art Time", Anushka chose to address the lack of programs for children on the Autism spectrum. Anushka created therapeutic art programs in our local library to promote peer interaction and give children on the spectrum free opportunities outside of the classroom. Because the use of motor skills is greatly beneficial for the restless tendencies of children on the Autism spectrum, participants were able to engage with one another while keeping their hands busy by working in activity stations. Anushka's program took a year of planning and was a huge success with 20 children participating in the summer activities.
Anushka serves as an example to the youth of Hillsborough Township through her achievements, leadership, and community service, and we are very proud that Anushka is a member of our community.

Limited Clean Up Coupons Still Available
Very Few Coupons Remaining - Please Call Ahead Before Picking Up
Coupons for access to drop off at the Auten Road Facility are available at the Hillsborough Township Department of Public Works (DPW) office, located at 21 East Mountain Road, Monday through Friday, 7am to 3pm.
Because availability is extremely limited, the Department of Public Works suggests you call ahead to confirm availability before coming in to pick up coupons. The phone number for DPW is (908) 369-3950.

- Dates Available: October 7th and October 28th

Hillsborough Rotary Club Establishes Harvey Relief Fund
In response to the overwhelming devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, The Rotary Club of Hillsborough has established a relief fund and will match community donations up to a total of $2,500. The Club will use the combined funds to purchase gift cards to major retailers to assist families who have been displaced from their homes by the unprecedented floods. Community members are invited to make donations over the next two weeks using the
"youcaring" page created for this purpose.
"We will focus our support on the recovery phase, while the Red Cross and other first responders take care of the immediate needs of the community," commented Anthony Franchini, president of the Rotary Club of Hillsborough. "As a community, we can offer our support in many ways. "Our
"youcaring" page allows anyone wishing to make a donation to double its impact, enabling us to make a difference for many families who have lost so much."
The Rotary Club of Hillsborough will work with fellow Rotary Clubs and others in the affected areas of Texas and Louisiana to distribute the gift cards directly to those families in need. It is anticipated that thousands of families whose homes and belongings were lost to the storm will need to replace clothing and other essentials so they can begin to establish a normal life again after the flooding subsides and the recovery phase begins.

CANCER CALLOUT VII 2017

The 7th Annual Nick Magos Cancer Callout will be held on Sunday, September 24th at the Woods Road Firehouse. The Cancer Callout raises money throughout the year with their main event being "The CALLOUT." Each year, the event, named after Nick Magos, one of the founders of the Somerset County SWAT Team who passed away from cancer, is run by SWAT Team members and is designe
d to benefit families who are in need of assistance due to their battle with cancer and or other life threatening illnesses.

Make a plan today. Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which
types of disasters
could affect your area. Know how you'll contact one another and reconnect if separated. Establish a family meeting place that's familiar and easy to find.
Step 1: Put together a plan by discussing these 4 questions with your family, friends, or household to start your emergency plan.

As you prepare your plan tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities. Be a Good Neighbor - Be Bear Aware
New Jersey is home to all kinds of beautiful wildlife - including black bears. Black bears are getting a lot of attention these days, for the wrong reasons. They're venturing too close to homes and into backyards, looking for food. Bears that look for food near your home or in your yard likely have learned bad habits from people who feed them intentionally, or unintentionally by carelessly leaving out food or garbage.
People who feed bears think they're helping them. But it only invites trouble. It can make them a nuisance or even aggressive. When that happens, the bears must be destroyed to protect your family and your neighbors. What's more, it's illegal to feed bears in New Jersey. Anyone who feeds bears could face a penalty of up to $1,000 for each offense.
Taking steps to avoid attracting bears with food or garbage is the best way to prevent them from becoming a nuisance near your home.
Here's what you can do to Be a Good Neighbor - Be Bear Aware:
- Use bear-proof garbage containers, if possible. They offer the best protection. Otherwise, store all garbage in airtight containers and place them along the inside walls of your garage, or in the basement, a sturdy shed or other secure area.
- Put out garbage on collection day, not the night before.
- Wash garbage containers with disinfectant solution at least once a week to remove odors. Draping rags soaked in bleach over your garbage bags also help to eliminate odors.
- Feed dogs and cats outside during daylight hours only. Immediately after feeding pets, remove all uneaten food and scraps as well as food bowls.
- Clean outdoor grills thoroughly after each use. Grease and food residue will attract bears.
- Do not place meat or any sweet foods in compost piles.
- Avoid feeding birds. They will survive without the supplemental seed that attracts bears. If you choose to feed birds, do so during daylight hours only, between December 1 and April 1, when bears are least active. Suspend feeder from a free-hanging wire, making sure it's at least 10 feet off the ground. Bring feeder indoors at night. Clean up spilled seeds and shells.
- Pick up any fruit that falls from fruit trees daily, and discard it in your airtight garbage containers.
- Consider installing electric fencing to protect crops, beehives and small livestock, if you live in an area with a large black bear population.
- Report black bear damage or nuisance behavior to your local police department or the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Fish and Wildlife at (877) 927-6337.

Update from the Health Department - Fly Control
Over the past ten days, the Hillsborough Health Department has responded to complaints from residents regarding periods of unusually large numbers of house fly populations causing nuisances in several neighborhoods throughout the Township. The Health Department is working closely with the Somerset County Agricultural Extension Service and Rutgers University entomologists to determine the source of the problem. Other towns in the County are experiencing this issue as well. At this time, the cause appears to be abnormally wet, cool conditions,which prompted a large hatch. This is a nuisance, but it is temporary.
There are a number of control measures that a homeowner may take to reduce the numbers of flies. Keeping garbage cans covered tightly to remove food for the flies, making sure all windows have properly fitting screens to keep flies out, using sticky fly paper inside and commercial fly traps outside to reduce populations.Sometimes a fan placed strategically can keep flies from getting into the home. Cleaning up dog droppings regularly, and turning compost piles is important to reducing fly populations.

Hillsborough Turns Teal in Support of Ovarian Cancer Awareness
A group of volunteers, many of them residents who have in some way been touched by Ovarian Cancer, gathered at the Municipal Building on August 31st to Turn the Town Teal.
Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers, and one of the five leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women.
In an effort to bring awareness to the community, teal-colored ribbons have been distributed and tied throughout the community as part of the Turn the Town Teal's national campaign.

News From Somerset County

Free Farmers Market Vouchers Available until Sept. 29
The Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services, located in the Human Services Building at 27 Warren St., will have free farmers market vouchers available for eligible seniors until Friday, Sept. 29.
Eligible individuals must be age 60 or above and reside in Somerset County. Income guidelines require that an individual's income not exceed $22,311 and a married couple's income not exceed $30,044.
Seniors can use the free vouchers, which are worth $25, to buy New Jersey fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables and herbs at participating farmers markets in Somerset County until Nov. 30.
People interested in applying before Sept. 29 can stop by the Somerset County Office on Aging & Disability Services in the Human Services Building, located at 27 Warren St., between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Vouchers will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last.

DisABILITY Services Fair Scheduled for Sept. 16
Freeholder Brian D. Levine invites residents to attend the free 2017 Somerset County DisABILITY Services Fair Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Thomas J. Kavanaugh VFW Hall, 600 Washington Ave. in Manville 08835.
People with disabilities, their caregivers, family members, friends and all in the community are invited. The theme of the event summarizes its purpose: "Opening doors and dialogue to welcome all countywide."
The event focuses on disability-related information, but will be of value to anyone interested in learning about county, state and local agencies, organizations and businesses that serve the citizens of Somerset County.
"We are pleased to be able to offer a wide variety of resources at this Fair," said Freeholder Brian D. Levine, human services division liaison. "I hope many people will take advantage of this opportunity to learn what is available to them, their family and friends.
