Dog to Dog Aggression
Inter-dog Aggression in Dogs
Inter-dog aggression occurs when a dog is overly aggressive towards dogs in the same household or unfamiliar dogs. This behavior is often considered normal, but some dogs can become excessively aggressive due to learning and genetic factors.
Inter-dog aggression occurs much more frequently in non-neutered male dogs. Common signs usually start appearing when the dog reaches puberty (between six and nine months old) or becomes socially mature at 18 to 36 months. Generally, inter-dog aggression is more of a problem between dogs of the same gender.
Symptoms and Types of Aggression in Dogs
The most common symptoms of inter-dog aggression include growling, biting, lip lifting, snapping, and lunging towards another dog. These behaviors may be accompanied by fearful or submissive body postures and expressions such as crouching, tucking the tail under, licking the lips, and backing away. Typically, before a severe inter-dog aggression incident in the same household occurs, more discreet signs of social control will become noticeable. One tactic a dog may use is staring and blocking the other dog's entrance into a room. A specific condition sometimes triggers the aggression, even though the dogs normally get along well.
Causes of Aggression in Dogs
The causes of this condition vary. A dog may have become overly aggressive because of its past experiences, including abuse and neglect. For example, it may not have socialized with other dogs as a puppy, or it may have had a traumatic encounter with another dog. Dogs rescued from dog fighting operations also tend to exhibit inter-dog aggression more frequently.
An owner's behavior may also influence a manifestation of the condition (e.g., if an owner shows compassion for a weaker dog by punishing the more dominant dog). Other reasons for aggression are fear, wanting to protect territory and social status, or a painful medical condition.
Diagnosing Aggression in Dogs
There is no official procedure to diagnose inter-dog aggression. Some symptoms are very similar to canine "play" behavior and excited, non-aggressive arousal. Biochemistry, urine analysis, and other laboratory tests usually yield unremarkable results. But if any abnormalities are identified, they may help the veterinarian find an underlying cause for the aggression.
If a neurological condition is suspected, an MRI scan may be necessary to determine whether it is a central nervous system (CNS) disease, or to rule out other underlying neurological conditions.
How to Handle Dog Aggression
There is no real cure for inter-dog aggression. Instead, treatment is heavily focused on controlling the problem. Owners must learn how to avoid situations that encourage aggressive behavior in the dog, and to break up fights quickly and safely when they occur. In situations where aggressive behavior is more likely to occur (e.g., walks in the park), the dog must be kept away from potential victims and be under constant control. The owner may also want to train the dog to feel comfortable wearing a protective head

muzzle.
Training for Aggressive Dogs
Behavioral modification also plays a crucial role in the treatment. For example, dogs should be trained to sit and relax on verbal cues, with small food treats as rewards. The owner may also want to condition the dog not to fear other dogs, by gradually exposing it to other dogs in public. Unfortunately, the only way to assuredly prevent your dog from injuring others -- especially if your dog has already been involved in an incident or incidents -- is to put the dog down (euthanize), cruel as it seems.
There is no licensed medication used to treat inter-dog aggression. If it is largely caused by fear or anxiety, as opposed to a desire to establish
dominance, then low dosages of certain Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, Tricyclic Antidepressants, or Benzodiazepines may be prescribed.
Successful treatment of inter-dog aggression is usually measured by the decrease in severity or frequency of incidents. In addition, the treatment recommendations need to be implemented over the entire life of the dog. Even if aggressive incidents are completely eliminated for a period of time, relapses may occur if the owner does not strictly adhere to the recommendations at all times.

Lucy has helped mend 2 very broken hearts from the passing of our precious Boston "Cloe" in September 2016. Today, Lucy is the most joyful tiny bundle of love. Her favorite past time is looking for any sunbathing opportunity, begging for cookies by the pantry door, and squeaking her favorite orange ball. She knows this is her 'furever' home and she is soaking it all in!! We love her so much! Thanks MABTR!"

Adoptable Dog of the Month
My name is
Misty. I am 9 year old Boston mix with a tail and weigh 30 pounds ( I'm a little overweight and in need of a diet). I need a new home because my owner started to care for his grandchildren who are toddlers and I did not do well with them walking around in my space. I am being fostered in St Louis, MO.
I am a loving little girl when it comes to my adult humans. But I do need a family with no children please.
I do well around the other dogs in the house but am not much of a playmate.
I enjoy walks which is a plus since I am needing to shed a few pounds. The weight is coming off with exercise and a new diet though!
I would love a low key household as I am mellow myself. I am a snuggle bug and will be your blanket when lounging around.
I am a great traveler. Already been on two road trips and behaved well in the hotel room.
I may be a mix but I am all Boston at heart!

Q: Some of the breeder dogs seem very young - are they suffering from health problems? Why would a breeder let a dog go when there are potentially more dollars to be made off it?
A:
Good question. Even when releasing dogs or selling them for cheap the breeder still makes money somehow.
The breeder could be in a situation where they have to reduce their number of stock, forcing the release of good dogs you would think they would keep.
There is also the situation where the puppy is too old for the pet stores and the broker or breeders do not want to hold the additional dog in their stock/inventory.
Sometimes the middle man (undercover rescue person) makes a deal with the breeder stating they will take two adults off their hand but require another dog be thrown in the mix to make it a deal.
There are also deals made between breeders. Breeder A wants dog one and two but Breeder B will only sell if Breeder A also takes dog three and four. Breeder A may not have room or any intention of keeping the unexpected additional dogs so they will take them because they really want dog one and two and release the other two to rescue.

Read the instructions below, go to our Facebook page and update your settings on your desktop or mobile device so you won't miss a thing!

- Under the "Following" drop down menu, select "See First" in your news feed.

And last but not least, be sure to routinely "Like", "Share" and "Comment" on our page. If Facebook doesn't see that you are interacting with our posts, they will remove us from your Facebook Feed.

Share your travel plans with MABTR and

As many of you know MABTR covers 13 states. 75% of our adoptions occur between foster homes and adopters in different states, requiring MABTR to set up a transport by car. We do not fly our dogs.
Many of us travel for business or pleasure by car so we ask that you share with us your travel plan should you have room for a Boston to hitch a ride.
Just some examples, and not limited to, of routes completed. Note that some routes are short distances where others a whole day:
- Colorado Springs, CO to Cheyenne, WY
- Omaha, NE to St Louis, MO
- Omaha, NE to Boise, ID
- Des Moines, IA to St Paul, MN
- Kansas City, MO to Springfield, MO

AGE is

I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.
Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.
MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
