Emerald Ash Borer: To Treat, or Not to Treat?
|
With a recent increase in media coverage, advertisements and tree-care company treatment recommendations related to
emerald ash borer (EAB) – a highly destructive, non-native insect that kills all true ash trees –
Colorado experts want to be sure consumers are receiving accurate information about the pest and its management. EAB is responsible for the death of tens of millions of ash trees in 30 states, and has become a concern for Colorado communities since its initial 2013 detection in Boulder, as 15 percent or more of all urban and community trees in the state are ash.

Progress continues on the new
Medical Office Building and
Parking Structure. The steel framing is almost finished on the Medical Office Building. During September the pre-cast members will start to arrive and be erected for the parking structure.
|
|
|
This unique street is under construction. It includes brick pavers with diagonal parking. Two blocks will have a flush design allowing for flexible parking arrangements. During community events, this portion of
Main Street could be closed to allow for numerous booths and pedestrian circulation. The block between
Promenade Drive and
Superior Drive will have diagonal parking built with permeable pavers providing water detention features. Small rain gardens will provide water quality measures. A single lane roundabout will control the first intersection east of McCaslin.

|

McCaslin Boulevard/Main Street Roundabout
|
|
The
new roundabout opened to through traffic in early July. Please be advised of the new traffic pattern. The side street approaches will be under construction for several weeks so no turns will be allowed at the roundabout during this period. Pedestrian facilities will open this month, and bicyclists will have the option of traveling through the roundabout in traffic or using the sidewalk. There will be periodic lane closures on
McCaslin in order to complete street light installation and landscape work.
Please be advised that the speed limit will remain 25 mph in this area during this construction and there will be flaggers present to coordinate temporary stops to allow for construction vehicle crossings. The
Sport Stable and
Downtown Superior will continue to be accessible via the temporary road located north of the roundabout, but southbound traffic desiring to access this road will proceed through the roundabout to make a U-turn to head north on McCaslin and then make a right at this road.
Thank you for your patience during the roundabout construction.

Pedestrian Crossing on Rock Creek Parkway
|
A contractor is currently making
concrete repairs at about two dozen locations throughout Town. Nearby residents will be contacted several days in advance of repairs near their homes. Please be aware of these construction activities.
Part of this project will entail installation of a
pedestrian crossing on
Rock Creek Parkway near the Safeway entrance. Part of the median will be removed and
Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) installed at this location, which will connect the two bus stops on either side of
Rock Creek Parkway.
In addition, concrete modifications and patching will be performed on the east side of
McCaslin Blvd. at Marshall to accommodate a third northbound through lane on McCaslin through the Marshall intersection. Lane closures will take place during construction.

Historical Commission Corner
|
|
As we near the end of summer, we are reminded that yet another school year is underway. In addition to parents, students and teachers, education is also on the minds of the Superior Historical Commission for various reasons. One is that the
Superior Historical Museum is located on the old school yard in Original Superior now called
Asti Park. The site was once the home of two school buildings, one housing grades 1 through 6 and the other the 7th and 8th grades. Notice there was no kindergarten or high school. Eighth grade graduates usually continued their high school years at Louisville, but many went to work on the family farm or in the Industrial Coal Mine. That’s right, many a teenage boy went right to the mines after 8th grade prior to World War II.
A second reason is that the Museum has exhibits relating to education. One shows school materials from 1942 and another features
Miss Edith Oerman, Superior’s most beloved teacher.
Thirdly, September means
second grade field trips. Parents of second graders should look out for your school’s dates and be prepared to follow up on the field trip experience. They will visit the
Grasso Park house and grounds,
Historical Museum in Asti Park and the
Town Hall Board room where the mayor and trustees will conduct a civics lesson. Parents can also help teachers by chaperoning the field trip.
Here are the dates:
Monarch K-8 -
September 22nd
Superior Elementary -
September 26th
Eldorado K-8 -
September 29th
The
Superior Historical Museum will be
open September 2nd from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Look for the red fire truck at 2nd and Maple Streets in Original Superior that day. For answers to questions or to ask for a tour of the Museum call
Bryan Meyer, Town Staff, at
303-499-3675 or
Larry Dorsey, Commission Chair, at
303-499-1969.

Fall prevention is not just for seniors. There are many things you can do inside and outside of your home to minimize the risk of falling.
Inside your home:
• Keep pathways clear
• Remove throw rugs or secure them with rubber backing
• Use night lights to light up hallways and door entrances at night
• Store frequently used items close by - eliminating stretching and bending and possibly losing your balance
Outside your home:
• Keep landscaping manicured and out of pathways
• Keep sidewalk and curbs in good repair, level and without cracks
• Watch for snow, ice and water on your route
• Wear sturdy footwear
• Use handrails and ramps where present
