Blessing the pets who have blessed us...

We had a great time on Wednesday at our last campfire worship of the season.  We had 7 of our four-footed family members join us for worship.  I love worshiping outdoors, especially with our animal friends to remind of our connection with all of creation.  Before long the trees will be starting to turn, and for many it is off to the races with the fall schedule.  Take time to enjoy creation and celebrate the beauty and wonder of God's gift to us.

Responding to the needs left by Hurricane Harvey

As the disaster in Houston unfolds many are wondering how we can help with the recovery?  Lutherans are good at helping and we are committed for the long haul. There are few better relief organizations than Lutheran Disaster Relief.  We pay for the administration out of our regular offerings so when you give a special gift, all of it goes to meeting the needs.  Click the link below for ways you can help.
Wednesday Suppers Begin Again on Sept. 6th!

All are welcome to enjoy a delicious meal and wonderful fellowship at Joy.  Supper time is from 5:15 to 6:30 pm.  A vegetarian option is also offered as an alternative at each meal.
Bring your friends and neighbors to the table and experience JOY!
Looking for a few good people
with "Joy" in their hearts
who don't mind getting their hands wet

Our Wednesday Night Supper is one of our ministries that is at the core of what we are about.  We are blessed to have a great cook to prepare the food (thank you Kelly) but preparing the food is only part of providing a meal.
We also need people willing to help with the set up and clean up.

This is where we need your help.   Many hands make light work.  If we can get 8 dish team organized, then no one would need to work more than once a month for 1 1/2 hour.  We are looking to have 2 shifts (early 4:30-6:00 and late  6:00-7:30). Teams would be 3-4 people and could be families or any kind of group.  You can form your own team, or indicate your willing to help and we will form the teams.   Thank you for your support of this important ministry.

Women's Bible Study to Begin Again on September 12th
The Joy Women's Bible Study, held in the Fireside Room at church every 2nd Tuesday of the month, September
through May, will begin again on Tuesday, September 12th at 1:30 P.M. The three fall sessions will be centered on "The Apostles' Creed." This Bible study was written by Julia Seymour, pastor at Lutheran Church of Hope, Anchorage, Alaska. She writes in the introduction to the study, "For our life together, creeds are more than just words. They are vessels for carrying one another through doubt, joy and sorrow." The Apostles' Creed is one of the oldest unifying symbols of Christianity. The early Christians needed a tool for teaching and evangelism that explained the basics of the faith. The Apostles' Creed shaped their baptismal training, blessing in dying and how communities of faith defined themselves in faithful union. The September Bible study will study the first article of the Creed which talks about God, the Holy Creator and Parent of all things. We'll explore what the Apostles' Creed says about God - and what it leaves undefined--as well as how this stirs our holy imagination. Emilie Horken will be the Bible study leader for the three fall sessions. All Joy women, guests and friends, are welcome at the monthly Bible study. Please do join us as we begin our exploration of the well-known Apostles' Creed.

A Message From Former Joy Pastor, Tim Peterson
I am beginning my ministry as interim pastor at the Norwegian Memorial Church (Mindekirken) on Sunday, September 10.

Mindekirken is one of two ELCA congregations that has worship in Norwegian almost every Sunday. (The other one is in Chicago). The congregation has always had native Norwegian pastors and is looking in Norway now for their next pastor.

Some of the members of Mindekirken are native speakers of Norwegian. But many are Norwegian-Americans who are interested in their Scandinavian heritage and are trying to learn a little Norwegian. The congregation has many associate members, who are members of other churches, but attend Mindekirken on an occasional basis. And there are often visitors from Norway who attend worship.

I would like to invite you to visit Mindekirken. The church is located just south of downtown Minneapolis, close to the intersection of Chicago and Franklin. The address is 924 E. 21st Street. Worship is at 11:00 a.m.

The worship service, including the sermon, are in Norwegian. The bulletin is prepared in Norwegian with an English translation. The sermon is also printed out fully in Norwegian with English translation, and is distributed to everyone who attends. So, even if you understand no Norwegian, you can still understand the sermon.

If you come, make sure that you allow time to stay for church coffee, which goes from noon until about 1:00 p.m. Church coffee includes a light lunch with open face sandwiches and fruit. It is a delightful Norwegian custom, providing the opportunity to visit with other people who are attending worship.

I will be the preacher on most Sundays. However, Mindekirken also has many visiting preachers. You can check their web site for the current schedule - www.mindekirken.net.

I think it is quite unusual to have a congregation that still uses the Norwegian language. But I believe Mindekirken can be a blessing because it helps connect Norwegian-Americans to their immigrant roots and to our distant cousins in Norway today.

Thank you for your prayers.

Tim Peterson

How are we doing financially?

We have had a very generous response to our capital appeal which exceeded our goal of $30,000 in just a few weeks. Thank you. Thank you.  Unfortunately our giving for our general, day to day operating of our ministry has not been able to keep up with the challenging budget we set for ourselves.  Since the beginning of the year we have had about $1000 more expense than income each month, which is starting to add up.  If each of us do a little we can meet the need.  If you are on the go this summer and not able to be with us, remember we still need your support. Thank you.

If you would like to give electronically you can do so through our web page
