Trash Collection Program Changes Proposed - Public Hearing Mon., Sept. 11, 7pm:
The Village Board is in the process of reviewing the Trash Collection Program and is considering moving to an automated system. Automated collection involves the use of a truck equipped with an automated arm, which allows the operator to empty trash carts and then return carts to their original position without leaving the cab of the vehicle (under normal circumstances).
The Village Board has scheduled a Public Hearing for residents about the potential change to an automated collection system. The Public Hearing will begin at 7:00pm on Monday, September 11th in the Village Board Room (2nd Floor) at Whitefish Bay Village Hall. Trash Quick Facts - Potential Automated Trash Collection Program
1. Each household would receive a free trash collection cart from the Village. This cart would be identical in size and shape to the recycling cart previously provided.
2. Weekly collection would take place on the same day that households currently receive pick-up. Households would be responsible for bringing the trash cart to the curb (within 10 feet) or to the alley edge.
Trash Why is the Village Board Considering a Change to Trash Collection?
1. Cost Savings: The conversion to an automated trash collection system would reduce Village annual trash collection operation and maintenance costs by an estimated $105,585 per year.
2. Environmental/Aesthetic Benefits: The use of uniform, covered trash carts helps to prevent littering due to blowing of uncovered trash items.
3. Improved safety for Village employees: Currently each Village trash collector lifts between 6,000 and 9,000 pounds of garbage and walks between 10 to 12 miles per day (in all weather conditions) pushing a collection cart up and down driveways, sidewalks and streets. As a result, Village collectors have sustained shoulder, arm, hand, back and knee injuries.
In addition, sharps disposed of in trash bags and cans without proper containers also pose a puncture risk as the Village trash collectors perform their duties. Chemical containers have also been found to be hidden in trash bags. These can break open when the collection truck hopper is compacted, resulting in Village trash collectors being exposed to the disbursement of chemicals and/or fumes.

If approved, conversion to an automated trash collection system would occur in Spring of 2018 (to correspond with the already approved change to the Recycling Collection Program).

Recycling Collection Program Summary/Past Board Decision:
Status as of August 2017: The Village Board of Whitefish Bay recently took action to authorize the automated implementation of every other week collection of recyclables to begin in spring of 2018. The recycling cart is a 95-gallon, wheeled cart that was previously provided free of charge to every household in the Village.

Lake View Ave. Sanitary Improvement Project to Begin Tuesday, September 5
A section of back pitched sanitary sewer main will be replaced beginning on
Tuesday, September 5.
This work will affect homeowners on Lake View from Santa Monica Boulevard to Consaul Place Mid City Plumbing will be performing this work under contract by the Village. The work is expected to last approximately one week. The adjacent residents have been previously notified of this work. The trench will be filled with gravel with the roadway then being repaired as part of the annual pavement mill and overlay project in September / October.
Chipping of Woody Material
: Acceptable woody chipping materials are tree branches and large woody shrubs that are to be placed on the parkway. This service continues in an every other week rotation.

2017 Sidewalk Improvement Project:
The 2017 Sidewalk Improvement Project is proceeding
with an expected completion date of
early
September. The area of main concentration this year is south of Hampton Road and east of Ardmore Avenue. We will also be completing some other needed sidewalk improvements throughout the village.

Mediation Services Available:
The Whitefish Bay Mediation Center
is a service for people and businesses
in Whitefish Bay. Mediation offers the opportunity for
people to find their own solutions with the aid of a trained mediator.
Services are available for adults as well as young people. Most
mediation is conducted at the Whitefish Bay Police Department as a matter of convenience.
- It's Quick: Mediations can usually be scheduled within two weeks of the referral as opposed to the judicial system, which may take many months.
- It's Confidential: The mediation takes place in a private, neutral setting.It's Convenient: Mediations can be arranged during the day or after business hours.
- Please call 414- 271-5464 to reach the Whitefish Bay Mediation Center.
Notice: All public parks in Whitefish Bay close at 9:00 pm daily. As a courtesy to neighboring residents, the police department will begin issuing citations after 9:30 pm.
Please help us keep our parks clean. There has been an increase in Village staff time required to pick up simple garbage left at Klode and other public parks. Please pick up your own trash, and help the community keep the parks and public spaces free of debris.
Notice: No dogs are allowed at Klode Park. There are a large number of children who use the park daily, and dogs are not allowed. Citations will be issued to violators of this ordinance.

| Village Hall Customer Service Location Changes Begin October 16, 2017 Village Hall Renovation Updates
The Village Hall of Whitefish Bay will be undergoing renovations and all services will be relocated for the eight-month Village Hall closure, beginning Oct. 12, 2017.

Mold is a common household nuisance and is found both inside and outside in varying amounts. For some people, mold and its spores cause very few problems, while for others it can be devastating-even life threatening. As many as
one-third of children in the U.S.,
including those who are considered "healthy," are at risk for allergic reactions to mold.
Symptoms of mold allergies
are similar to those of other allergies, which can make it hard to determine the cause. Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, wheezing, and coughing. However, symptoms can escalate to more serious problems such as respiratory and circulatory issues.
Mold flourishes in warm, damp environments, which is why warm summer temperatures frequently stir up mold allergies. Preventing mold is much easier than treating it. Simply cleaning up the mold is not effective if the cause of the mold has not been found and remedied.
To reduce health risks associated with mold exposure, reduce humidity in the home. Install a dehumidifier if necessary. Open windows for ventilation, but close them if the outdoor humidity levels are high. Seek out and remedy any recurrent moisture issues.
Potential sources of indoor humidity are:
- Pipes/ Drainage-repair any leaking pipes (watch for signs of hidden leaks like water marks on ceilings or walls); make sure downspouts empty far from the house
- Bathrooms-remove carpeting, dry spills on the floor, run an exhaust fan or open a window, check shower curtains for mold growth
- Kitchen-check for leaks under refrigerator, dishwasher, other appliances using water
- Household plants-check for mold growth in pots, especially in rooms that are damp and have low ventilation
- Toys-dry all pool, bath and teething toys that are often wet; if possible, run through the dishwasher periodically
- Sippy cups and water bottles-regularly disassemble, clean, dry, and re-assemble, as mold frequently grows around some of the smaller parts

In this Autobiographical conversation piece, Yollande Deacon will walk the audience through her immigration as a Academic scholarship recipient from the remote mountains of West Cameroon, West Africa to bustling streets of Milwaukee, the challenges of settling in a new culture, the discoveries, triumphs and , rewards of building relationship, a family, businesses and community as a native African women now calling Milwaukee Home.
About Yollande: Yollande Tchouapi Deacon is a native of Bantu from the Bamileke tribe of Cameroon in West Africa. She is a wife and mother. She is also a self-described dreamer, idealist and food lover, whose life and work is fueled by the cuisine of her ancestors.
She was raised in a family of restaurateurs in a community where meals were not only a source for nourishment, but a means for bonding and social activity. And her upbringing instilled an enduring appreciation for community, a desire to care for others, and a strong sense of cultural identity and pride.
Yollande's journey to Milwaukee began at Marquette University, where she completed her master's degree in business. Once in the Cream City, Yollande married into a Jamaican family, whose traditional roots touched and intermingled with her own. The experience fueled her ongoing desire to share an honest and authentic view of both African and Jamaican cultures with a wider audience.
She found her voice through two distinct brands: Afro Fusion Cuisine and her restaurant Irie Zulu. Both are rooted in African tradition with an aim to assist consumers in rediscovering the simple joys of cooking natural, flavorful and healthy meals together. The brands showcase the versatility, uniqueness, heritage, beauty and treasures of tribal Africa through the eyes of a well-traveled native African who now calls Milwaukee home.
