More than a Bookstore... a Community.
Banned and Better than Ever

September is my favorite month of the year -- Banned Books Week is coming!  A celebration of knowledge, challenging ideas, and the power of the written word, this is the perfect time to curl up with one of the most challenged books of this year, such as This One Summer, by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki, or Two Boys Kissing, by David Levithan. Thank you to all of the Sandia Prep students and parents who ordered their school books through Page One this year.

Page 1 Books is more than just a unique bookstore: it's a community. With our knowledgeable booksellers, collection of resident authors, and loyal locals, we have built a fellowship of readers, writers, and enthusiasts. Stop by soon and discover what our local, Independent bookstore has in store for you.

Sincerely,
Page 1 Books

"Tangled branches of
Shadowy hair
Wrinkle crisp lines
In the September air.

Black robins bobbing,
Dig out
From summer coarsen throats
A solitary song."

- Charlotte Ballard, The Maple Dances

Read Harder Challenge

The Page One Staff is once again taking on BookRiot's  Read Harder Challenge! The challenge consists of 24 tasks--averaging to 2 books a month--chosen to push you to read books you otherwise wouldn't have picked up.

To the right are some of the books we've read this month. As we're more than halfway through the year, let us know how your challenge is progressing! Email us at  [email protected], Tweet  @pageonebooks, or message us on  Facebook with your progress and we'll feature you on our website!

Resist Empathize Act Discuss

Each month we're going to highlight a few books on a subject of particular relevance.

August: Latino Heritage
Out of Darkness, by Ashley Hope Perez
New London, Texas. 1937. Naomi Vargas and Wash Fuller know about the lines in East Texas as well as anyone. They know the signs that mark them. They know the people who enforce them. But sometimes the attraction between two people is so powerful it breaks through even the most entrenched color lines. And the consequences can be explosive.

Other reads:

An American Sickness,  by Elisabeth Rosenthal
At a moment of drastic political upheaval, An American Sickness is a shocking investigation into our dysfunctional healthcare system - and offers practical solutions to its myriad problems. Breaking down this monolithic business into the individual industries-the hospitals, doctors, insurance companies, and drug manufacturers-that together constitute our healthcare system, Rosenthal exposes the recent evolution of American medicine as never before.

How Winter Began,  by Joy Castro
Joy Castro's  How Winter Began  traces characters as they seek compassion from each other and themselves.  Thematically linked by the lives of women, especially Latinas, and their experiences of poverty and violence in a white-dominated, wealth-obsessed culture,  How Winter Began  is a delicately wrought collection of stories. The question at the heart of this riveting book is how or whether to trust one another after the rupture of betrayal.

   Borderlands/La Frontera, by Gloria Anzaldua
Rooted in Gloria Anzaldúa's experience as a Chicana, a lesbian, an activist, and a writer, the essays and poems in this volume profoundly challenged, and continue to challenge, how we think about identity. Borderlands/La Frontera remaps our understanding of what a "border" is, presenting it not as a simple divide between here and there, us and them, but as a psychic, social, and cultural terrain that we inhabit, and that inhabits all of us.
