KlezmerWorkshopsKlezmer Workshops and Jams

Join us for our continuing KlezCalifornia Klezmer Workshops & Jams. Each event is taught by a terrific musician and teacher and includes learning tunes with authentic klezmer style, and a traditional jam. The balance of learning by ear vs. with charts is chosen by each teacher. For all instruments; no klezmer experience needed (but it doesn't hurt!). Must be at least intermediate level on your instrument. Mute required if you are a brass player. Optional: bring recording device. To get a head start, check out sheet music and/or sound files in advance.

Registration: $25 sliding scale, for participants. Pay on site with cash or check. Refreshments included. Listeners welcome; donation requested. More info: 415.789.7679, [email protected].

YIVO online courses
this Fall: "Discovering Ashkenaz: Jewish Life in Eastern Europe," taught by Professor Samuel Kassow, and "Folksong, Demons, and the Evil Eye: Folklore of Ashkenaz," taught by Professor Itzik Gottesman.

Broadway's "Indecent," in Yiddish with English subtitles, is scheduled to be shown on PBS on November 17 at 9pm (yes, on Shabes). Based on Sholem Asch's "God of Vengeance," the play's director won a Tony, and PBS videotaped the show before it closed. A history of the play is in the McGill alumni newsletter.
