Join us for worship and religious education!
Services and activities for children take place on Sunday morning at 10:00am during the summer.
|
Note: The UCE office will be closed Monday, September 4 in observance of Labor Day.

Help UCE donate to Hurricane Harvey victims!
We will be collecting diapers at UCE to ship to the Texas Diaper Bank, which is distributing diaper kits to hurricane evacuees. Relief organizations in Texas are assisting thousands of evacuees with food, water and shelter, but don't always provide diapers. We will send both diapers for babies and young children, as well as for seniors with incontinence. Please bring your donations to church, starting this Sunday, September 3, through Sunday, September 10. If you have questions, contact Heather Brown.

Sunday, September 3
Worship Service - 10:00am
"Identity, Intersections, and Impasses
"
In an age of identity politics and intersectionality, as we struggle to build a broad justice coalition, friction comes with the territory. How we move within and among that friction is of ultimate concern. Rev. Eileen Wiviott will preach this Labor Day sermon.
Children in kindergarten through sixth grade will begin in the sanctuary, then go downstairs to room 5 for activities. Childcare for infants, toddlers and preschoolers will be available from 9:30-11:30am.
Join us to stand in support of Black Lives Matter
11:10pm-11:30am
You are invited to stand on Ridge Avenue between 11:10am and 11:30am to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
Signs and buttons are available for purchase at the back of the sanctuary. Signs and song lyrics will be provided for use.
Sponsored by the REAL team.
The Chris Isely Cancer Support Group -
9:00am
The group is open to anyone facing cancer, either personally or through a family member or friend. This lay-led group is a safe place for sharing and hope. Interested participants are encouraged to drop in any time. Questions? Contact Renee Hoff.

Sunday, September 10, 9:15 and 11:00am
"Gathering the Waters: Ingathering and Welcome"
Come celebrate our annual water communion and celebrate our new members as we begin the church year. Rev. Bret Lortie leading.
Sunday, September 17, 9:15 and 11:00am
"A No Complaint World"
What would the world look like without complaining? What would church look like? Our homes? Would everything fall apart without constant critique, or could we learn to live with, as the Buddha called it, "suchness" -- things as they are. And can a preacher get through a sermon on complaining without complaining about complaints? Rev. Bret Lortie speaking.
Sunday, September 24, 9:15 and 11:00am
"All Those Pronouns!"
Cis-gender? Transgender? Gender non-binary? Non-conforming? And why does the urinal upstairs have police tape across it? These questions, and more, about the many ways we can understand gender and respond to a growing awareness of ourselves (you included!) will be explored. Rev. Bret Lortie speaking.

Mary Shelden will collect your used solar eclipse glasses to be donated to Astronomers Without Borders. Your glasses will be shared with children in Asia and South America for the 2019 eclipses there! Just leave your glasses in Mary's office mailbox - and thank you!

Do you sing? play an instrument? dance or choreograph? Are you a visual artist of any stripe or medium? Can you read a storybook or spin a great yarn? Do you do spoken word, improv, stand-up, reader's theater? Have you done Shakespeare in the Park - or in your living room?
Mary Shelden, your new Director of Lifespan Religious Education, is looking to recruit talent, to be deployed during the Message for All Ages during the weekly service, or periodically for special sessions of Children and Youth Religious Education. If you have a skill or talent you'd be willing to share to enrich our worship and RE programs, she'd like to know about it! Two ways of alerting Mary about your talent:
- (Preferred): Pick up a Talent Report Form from the RE bulletin board in the front foyer hallway, and slip it into Mary's mailbox in the UCE office - or under the office door, if the office is closed;
- Send an email to [email protected], and let Mary know about what talent(s) you 'd be willing to share.

It's almost September and time to start collections for the Giving House. This year we have added a third beneficiary, the Refugee RoundTable. Also, some items have been eliminated and some new ones have been added. As in past years, we are seeking groups to sponsor each month's collections. Sponsors agree to match the donations with an equal amount of each item collected and deliver all the donations to the receiving organization. We count all the donations at the end of the month and let you know what you will need to contribute. This is a relatively easy and inexpensive service project, and usually costs between $10 and $20 per person.
Click here for the list of requested items. For more information, contact
Betty Walker.

Want to expand your circle of friends at UCE? Join us in the UCE tradition of Friendship Dinners (for adults) shared in the homes of fellow members and friends. Hosts provide the main dish; guests bring the other dishes. This is a wonderful way to get to know other UCE folks in a relaxed, intimate setting, and begin lasting friendships.
Our dinner dates in 2017-2018 are:
October 14, 2017,
December 9, 2017,
February 24, 2018,
April 21, 2018
Never tried it? Used to participate but dropped out?
Now's the time to jump in--or back in-- to this updated, 21st Century version of this 50-or-more-year-old tradition. Find out why it has been around for so long! Sign up to host and attend some or all these dinners. Can't host? You are still welcome to participate (but without enough hosts dinners don't happen).
Look for our sign-up table at church on Sundays, September 10 - September 24 or click here to sign up online.
Sign-up ends September 24.
