ABOUT US

Founded in 1994, the Immunization Action Coalition of Washington (IACW), a program of WithinReach, works to improve the health of the community by minimizing the incidence of vaccine preventable diseases through the optimal use of immunizations across the lifespan. Our priorities for 2017 are catching up toddlers by age three; be a trusted source of timely communication about immunizations; and work with non-traditional partners.

2016 TEEN IMMUNIZATION RATES RELEASED
We're pleased to share a message from the Washington State Department of Health about new teen immunization rates:

CDC has released the 2016 National Immunization Survey Teen data, including Washington's immunization rates. The results show impressive gains on several HPV measures. One of the changes was statistically significant: 1 dose of HPV for males and females combined increased from 56.1% to 64.8%. We also saw a large increase in 2+ doses of varicella (79.21% to 84.9%).

On other vaccines our rates were similar to 2015, including Tdap, meningococcal conjugate, and MMR.

These data reflect the hard work that public health, healthcare providers, and community partners have been doing together for several years to increase the number of teens who get the HPV vaccine. However, not as many teens are getting all needed doses. While the Department of Health is encouraged by the great strides we've made, we are still concerned that HPV immunization rates (64.8%) lag behind Tdap (86.8%) and meningococcal (75.1%) coverage. Since all of these vaccines should be given at the same time, this means we are missing a lot of opportunities to protect Washington kids from many cancers.

State health officials are also concerned that our teen MMR rate (88.9%) is below the community immunity level needed to prevent the spread of measles (95%).

The Department of Health's news release is here. You can review both national and statewide NIS-Teen results at the CDC's TeenVaxView. The article about the nationwide data is in the August 25 MMWR
