Dear Friend:

You might remember that, last year, the City Council launched LA's first-ever comprehensive sidewalk repair program. We pledged to invest more than $30 million a year and a total of $1.4 billion over the next 30 years to make all 11,000 miles of city sidewalks safe and accessible for everyone. The program, called Safe Sidewalks LA, is one of the biggest and boldest infrastructure projects in LA's history.

Our investment in sidewalk repair is already making communities better and safer throughout the city. Since the Safe Sidewalks LA began, we've been hard at work fixing sidewalks at parks, libraries and recreation centers, and also offering residents a way to make necessary repairs in their neighborhoods.

One critical piece of the program is the rebate component, which allows property owners who want to make repairs outside of their home or business a chance to do so, while sharing a portion of the cost with the city. In order to make the rebate more attractive and useful to property owners, this week, the City of Los Angeles increased the rebate amount to a maximum of $10,000 for residential and commercial property owners. Previously, homeowners were eligible for up to $2,000, while commercial property owners could receive up to $4,000.

If you're a property owner with broken sidewalks in front of your business or home, you are eligible for the rebate program. To better understand how to get enrolled and to find out more about the rebate, visit www.sidewalks.lacity.org/rebate-program-frequently-asked-questions.

Learn more about the overall Safe Sidewalks LA program here: www.sidewalks.lacity.org

I hope the newly increased rebate will encourage even more Angelenos to take advantage of this great opportunity to fix their sidewalks with help from the city. As always, I welcome your thoughts, comments and questions: [email protected] .

Very truly yours,
Councilmember Paul Krekorian, District 2

RecycLA: City Launches New Waste Collection Program
for Commercial and Multifamily Buildings

LOS ANGELES - The City of Los Angeles recently launched a new waste collection program, recycLA, which aims to expand recycling services to an estimated 80,000 apartment buildings and commercial properties across Los Angeles.

RecycLA is part of the city's larger sustainability plan to reduce waste from landfills by 90 percent by 2025 and put LA on the path to zero waste. The new system divides the city into 11 zones, each of which will be served exclusively by one service provider for waste and recycling collection. According the Bureau of Sanitation, the program will also result in fewer trucks congesting neighborhoods and less wear and tear on streets. Collection companies are also required to use only clean-fuel burning trucks, which will help to improve our air quality.

The new waste and recycling program, which began it's roll-out on July 1, will also set uniform, regulated monthly rates for multi-family and commercial customers throughout Los Angeles. For information about the rate schedule and frequently asked questions about the new program, visit  www.recycla.com .

Customers can contact the LA Sanitation Customer Care Center at (800) 773-2489 24/7 or click here to use the provider area map tool   to learn about their assigned recycLA service provider. If you have concerns, you can also contact Councilmember Krekorian at (818) 755-7676.

* RecycLA applies to businesses, institutions, and large multifamily buildings only. It does not impact single-family homes or multifamily units that get waste collection services from the City of Los Angeles.
LA Examines the Risk of Threatened Federal Cuts

LOS ANGELES - At this week's Budget and Finance Committee hearing, members discussed an initial report on how the White House's proposed budget, as well as its threats on immigration, could impact the city's coffers. Councilmember Krekorian, who chairs the committee, authored the motion calling for the report with the aim of clarifying the degree of danger the city faces if Congress approves massive federal budget cuts.

The committee discussed the possibility that federal grants may be at risk in several city departments, including the Los Angeles Police Department. Krekorian also stated that the budget cuts proposed by the Trump administration, if approved, "would so devastate so many areas of fundamental services to our people that there is no way this city could expect to make up for it, and that's just in terms of services to vulnerable Angelenos." He added that knowing the extent of the threats would help Los Angeles better protect its residents and maintain its level of services.

The Budget and Finance Committee will take up the issue again in the coming weeks after city officials update the report with the latest numbers under consideration in Washington. Congress has until the beginning of October to adopt a budget.

Making Progress

The program is a collaboration between police officers, outreach workers from the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority and members of the city's Bureau of Sanitation. It's objective is to provide homeless people in the area with resources and to ensure that neighborhood parks, streets and sidewalks are safe and clean.  Recently, the HOPE team in Council District 2 placed a family of five in housing and connected them with services.
