Intersectionality
Sunday, September 10 at 9:00 am
in the Bloom Room
We often consider issues of identity in disconnected boxes. We may think about the LGBTQ+ community, communities of color, the deaf community but do not think about the intersections of these communities. We forget that issues that affect communities of color affect the LGBTQ+ community and vice versa or we then fail to realize that a member of the deaf community may exist in both these groups, one of these groups, or neither of these groups. We will get a chance to explore our own personal intersectionality, what that means in regards to a person’s power and privilege in society, and how this plays out on an interpersonal and social level.

Midlife Spirituality
Sunday, September 24 at 9:00 am
in the Bloom Room
Midlife can be a time of questioning, discomfort, and feeling off balance. It can also be a time of exhilarating discovery. For many people, the midlife years present opportunities for deep and meaningful spiritual growth. The goal of this class is to give participants a place to discuss the typical losses and discoveries of midlife, and lay the groundwork for discovering the sacred places and times we experience God’s presence.

Catherine Penn Williams
, a Jungian psychotherapist and member of the Adult Spiritual Formation team at GSP.

Care of Creation—Care of the Poor
Sunday, October 1 at 9:00 am
in the Bloom Room
In the recent papal encyclical Laudato Si’, Pope Francis noted that “a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates about the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.” Join us for a thoughtful conversation about these important issues.

God's Forgotten Language

Dream Group: Deciphering God’s Forgotten Language
Saturday, Sept 9 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in the Bloom Room
Subsequent meetings will be the first Saturday of each month beginning Oct 7
In this monthly group, we’ll support each other in understanding our dreams through the lens of the work of psychologist Carl Jung and his understanding of the human psyche. We’ll look for the ways in which our dreams form a bridge between our conscious waking self and the Self that is present in the deepest part of ourselves, a collaboration that can guide us on the path of individuation. While we are part of and sometimes use the language of a Christian community, we do not impose any doctrine or dogma on members of our group. Recommended reading:
Natural Spirituality
by Joyce Rockwood Hudson (revised edition) and
Inner Work
by Robert Johnson.
All are welcome. No registration is necessary. Please email

Faithful Dissent: Loving Our Way into a Brighter Tomorrow
With Ed Bacon and Stanley Hauerwas
Available online 24/7 beginning Monday, Sept 11 through Monday, Sept 25
We live in increasingly divisive times. From politics to sports, the gift of human difference can quickly become a chasm that can invite serious discord and division. What does it mean for good Christians to disagree? How do we do so faithfully? Should Christians protest? How should they do so? In this free online class from ChurchNext, we get answers from two prominent and in many ways, opposing camps. Social activist Ed Bacon believes Christians should be at the cutting edge of social protest. Ethicist Stanley Hauerwas believes Christians best shine their light by living faithful lives, as people distinct from the world. Their views come to light in these four video presentations:
- The Gift of Dissent
- The Nature of Dissent
- Witness and Dissent
- How We Dissent
The class can be completed in 45 minutes. For more info, click

.
You can register for the course right now, but it will not be available to take until Monday, September 11. It will remain open and free through Monday, September 25. You can take it for free anytime, 24/7, during that time period. If you register now we'll send you an email to remind you.

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood
by Trevor Noah
Friday, September 8 at 9:30 am
in the Bloom Room
Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of
The Daily Show
began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, hidden by his mother from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother’s unconditional love.
“By turns alarming, sad and funny, [Trevor Noah’s] book provides a harrowing look...at life in South Africa under apartheid….[and] a love letter to the author’s remarkable mother.”—Michiko Kakutani,
The New York Times

Third Friday Fall Film Series: Stories of Reconciliation, Redemption & Hope
Philomena (2013)
Friday, September 15 at 6:30 pm
in the Bloom Room
“Philomena” focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Judi Dench), the Irish mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock and given away for adoption in the United States. In following church doctrine, she was forced to sign a contract that wouldn't allow for any sort of inquiry into the son's whereabouts. After starting a family years later in England and moving on with her life, Lee meets Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son.
“Judi Dench's portrayal of a stubborn, kindhearted Irish Catholic trying to discover what became of the toddler she was forced to give up as a teenager is so quietly moving that it feels lit from within.” —
New York Times

Jim Franks,
Steve Williams and Catherine Penn Williams
