Eagle Scout Zachary Seery Honored with Proclamation

Zachary Seery, a rising Sophomore at Hillsborough High School and member of Boy Scout Troop 186, was recently recognized by the Mayor and Township Committee for earning the status of Eagle Scout. Zachary, 15 and in his Freshman year, is one of the younger scouts to achieve this honor. Zachary devoted many hours and served the Boy Scouts in an exemplary manner in order to achieve this highly coveted position.
Zachary's Eagle Scout Project consisted of refurbishing the play area for Mary Mother of God Church Pre-school by removing the old mulch and replacing with new, building an outdoor chalkboard, setting hop-scotch stones and creating a reading station for the students. Zachary held a fundraiser to buy new toys for the playground to replace those that were no longer useable.
Zachary is a member of the Order of the Arrow, the National Honor Society for Boys Scouts of America and completed the National Youth Leader Training course. Zachary is a member of Mary Mother of God's Youth Group and a member of Hillsborough High School's Team 75 Roboraiders Robotics.
The Mayor and Hillsborough Township Committee recognize and extend our sincere congratulations to Zachary Seery for having achieved the status of Eagle Scout, an honor for both him and for those who guided him, with best wishes for a bright future.

Committeeman Burchette Meets with Local Scout
Last month, Boy Scout Shreyas Murali interviewed Committeeman Greg Burchette to discuss
the rights, duties, and obligations of being a good citizen. Shreyas is working toward earning his Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge, and ultimately becoming an Eagle Scout.

Boro Girl Scouts Hold Awards Night
Earlier this summer, Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley was honored to be a part of the Girl Scouts Annual Court of Awards, celebrating the accomplishments of all of Hillsborough's Girl Scouts.
The three highest awards Girl Scouts can earn are the Bronze, Silver and Gold. Before working on attaining any of these awards the troop as a whole must complete what is called a Journey Award & Take Action Project at each level.
The Bronze Award, earned by 40 girls, requires girls to work together as a team to complete a Take Action project, with each girl being held responsible for a portion of the work.
The Silver Award, earned by 24 girls, focuses on responsibility as well as planning, organizing, and communication skills and can be earned independently or in small groups, with 2 or 3 girls working together.
The Gold Award, earned by 5 girls, is the highest award that a Girl Scout can earn and is worked on independently. The Gold Award focuses on leadership, planning, organizing, communication, creative thinking, independence and responsibility.

HHS Runner at Nike Cross Country Nationals - Chloe Wong
Hillsborough High School Runner Chloe Wong places 4 in the US Regionals and goes to National Championships
Hillsborough High School Junior Chloe Wong placed 86 in the US Nike
Cross Country Nationals in Portland Oregon with a time of 19:19.4. She
qualified for the National Championship after placing 4 in the Nike
Cross Regional Northeast Championships with a time of 18:43.2.
According to HHS Head Coach Richard Refi, "Chloe had trained
consistently for this race and it was great to see her be a standout
at the Cross Regional Northeast Championships and then qualify for and
do so well at the National Championship." Chloe added, "this was an
amazing experience that I will never forget!"

Are you or your group or organization looking for service hours? Hillsborough Township often has volunteer/service opportunities and is now maintaining a list of individuals, organizations and groups looking to give back to the community.
The purpose of this initiative is to link those individuals or groups in need of completing service hours with the organizations who have service opportunities.

Flu Vaccination Clinic to be held on September 14th
The Hillsborough Township Health Department and Green Brook Family Medicine are co-sponsoring a Community Flu Vaccination Clinic at the Hillsborough Municipal Building on Thursday, September 14 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. We will have the tetravalent (4 strains) of flu vaccine for all ages, and high dose flu vaccine for Seniors if requested. Vaccines will be available for ages 6 months and up at this clinic.
The Hillsborough Township Health Department will also team up with Walgreens of Hillsborough to sponsor 2 additional flu vaccination clinics on Tuesday, October 3, from 3 to 6:30 PM, and Tuesday, October 10 from 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM at the Hillsborough Municipal Building. These vaccinations will be available for those ages 12 years and up.
Each of these clinics will require health insurance, medicare, or cash/check. Please check on the Health website to be sure your medical insurance will be accepted. If your insurance is not accepted, check the cost of the vaccines on the website. Please go to

and select Health Department from the Departments menu.
It is possible that some people could have a reaction to the flu vaccination. Please review all of the information about flu shots on the health website, or go to

Library STEAMS ahead with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math programs for Adults!
The SCLSNJ Hillsborough library is excited to sponsor the area's new Geeky Grown-Ups Group! The group is for fans of the many popular science fiction and fantasy topics, from Game of Thrones to Star Trek to Wonder Woman. The informal gatherings are an opportunity to share these interests with other local enthusiasts. The group will meet monthly at the library, beginning on
August 17 at 6:30 p.m. All of the "geeky grown-ups" out there are invited to join the fun and fellowship.
Community members will have the opportunity to get their creative STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) going with a new programming initiative at the Hillsborough Branch - STEAM for Adults. This monthly series will be incorporated into the adult services programming lineup starting in October.
Robodyssey's "Circuits on Paper", scheduled for October 9th, will feature creating a multi colored greeting card for the upcoming holidays. The art and science of cooking will be demonstrated at the November 8th "Freezing and Dehydrating" workshop. Adult attendees will participate by making a jar of jam to take home. In December, Hillsborough sends a shout out to ugly sweater fans with an art program planned to create one. On December 13th adult patrons are invited to build a website on Wix, a cloud based web building platform.
By the holidays, adult patrons will be ready with a card, a gift of jam, an ugly sweater to wear, and a website to share with their online community. All created with their newly developed STEAM skills!

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
Help raise awareness by putting up teal bows at the Hillsborough Municipal Building
Susyn Timko, the coordinator for Turn the Towns Teal in Hillsborough,
lost her mom to Ovarian Cancer and has been volunteering with Turn the Towns Teal for the past 8 years. Susyn will be turning Hillsborough teal on Thursday August 31st and is looking for volunteers
to help.
Volunteers will meet at the Municipal Building at 10 am on August 31st to put up teal bows around the Municipal Complex. If you are interested in helping, email Susyn at

.
If you are not able to help on the 31st, you can still help. Susyn also needs volunteers to help take the bows down at the end of September. Please email Susyn for more information.

Visit the Government Tents at the 4-H Fair for Games, Activities, Fun, Info
The Somerset County 4-H Fair will run Aug. 9 to 11, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, at the Somerset County 4-H Fairgrounds at North Branch Park on Milltown Road.
"The Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders is proud and pleased to once again be a part of this annual celebration of our rich agricultural heritage," said Freeholder Director Peter S. Palmer. "We invite residents to visit the Somerset County government tents, which will feature interactive activities, games and information on important citizen programs and services.
"The 4-H Fair is a fun way to learn about programs and services that you and your loved ones may want to take advantage of now or in the future," he said. "Somerset County has many programs for our older population and youth, leadership programs and volunteer opportunities.

'Project First Class' Seeks School Supplies
The Somerset County Commission on the Status of Women is conducting its annual "Project First Class" school-supplies collection. Children of families served by the Food Bank Network and other nonprofits in Somerset County will benefit from the donations.
NEW
school supplies - such as notebooks, three-ring binders (1½ to 3 inches), pencil cases that fit inside binders, paper, glue sticks, safety scissors, index cards, highlighters, markers, pens, pencils and crayons - will be accepted. Most-needed items are new or gently-used backpacks.
Donations may be dropped off to the Somerset County Freeholders' Office
on the third floor of the county administration building at 20 Grove St., Somerville, through Friday, Aug. 11
. The office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.,
except for July 4.
Free parking is available in the adjacent Bernie Field Parking Deck off East High Street.
