This Week in Water History
August 4, 2007: On August 4, 2007 the Phoenix Mars lander was launched from Earth to land on the surface of Mars. It was sent in response to the Mars Odyssey Orbiter's discovery of the possibility of finding ice under the polar surface of Mars. Odyssey's sensors detected a gamma ray signature from hydrogen concentrated around the 'north' pole during its mission. Phoenix would go there to find out.

Phoenix landed on Mars on May 25, 2008 and began soil experiments. The robotic arm from the lander scraped a shallow trench in the soil exposing a shiny substance that was later proved to be water ice. NASA announced the discovery of water ice on Mars late July 2008.

Georgia backs recommendation to dismiss Florida's water lawsuit Georgia on Monday argued in a brief filed with the U. S. Supreme Court that Florida's lawsuit over water use from the Apalachicola River system should be dismissed because a federal agency wasn't included.  more

U.S. House OKs $160 million for Lake Okeechobee dike, Everglades, algae research Projects to combat harmful algae blooms and restore the Everglades will get nearly $160 million in federal money in a bill approved Thursday evening by the U.S. House of Representatives.  more

Regulators approve dramatic water rate hike for thousands of Seminole residents  Tens of thousands of Seminole County homeowners will see their water bills rise dramatically in coming months after the state Public Service Commission on Thursday unanimously approved a request by Utilities Inc. of Florida to nearly double water and wastewater rates. more

Why Did Miami Beach's Multimillion-Dollar Anti-Flood Pumps Fail? Miami Beach has the second most properties threatened by rising seas in the world, so the city recently sank $500 million into a Sisyphean project to install up to 80 anti-flood pumps across the city. more

Local officials take issue with report that questions city water quality A report by a national environmental group that questioned the city of Venice's water quality has prompted both the city and Sarasota County Health Department to push back, questioning the validity of the the survey's collection methods.  more

Sewage spills concern Polk County residents Hundreds of thousands of gallons of wastewater have come up from Polk County's sewage system so far this year, including about 12,000 gallons from two separate incidents Monday. more

Deputy takes the helm of South Florida Water Management District The South Florida Water Management District chose its deputy director as the agency's new chief, replacing a combative insider close to the governor with a career environmental regulator who has spent more than a decade working on Everglades restoration.  more

District Grant Allows Jay To Upgrade Water System More than $160,000 in grant funding from the Northwest Florida Water Management District helped the town of Jay upgrade its water system with more than 4,500 linear feet of waterline. more
