During the month of May
coyote pups born in March are ready to come out of their dens. They will still stay close to their dens (they have multiple den sites) and
adults are in close attendance throughout July. The pups are small and inexperienced so people and pets using the parks and open spaces may easily spot the curious critters. But adults are close by, keeping an eye out for danger, and may make themselves more visible to draw attention away from their offspring. Escorting behavior is relatively common.
This means a coyote will follow people and their pets when their pups are nearby. One animal may be highly visible and a second adult may be nearby and more hidden. Once they decide the danger is far enough from the current location of the pups they will usually disappear. If you spot a coyote on an evening or morning walk, take a moment to haze them: make eye contact, wave your hands and make lots of noise. Keep this up until they respond by leaving the area, if they hide in the bushes it counts!
This will help remind coyotes to avoid contact with people and pets AND ensure their pups will learn the same!

McCaslin Boulevard/Main Street Roundabout
|
|
The new roundabout opened to through traffic in early July. Please be advised of the new traffic pattern. The side street approaches will be under construction for several weeks so no turns will be allowed at the roundabout during this period. The bypass travel lanes which were in place on
McCaslin Boulevard during the roundabout construction were removed in July and the new connection to
Main Street is under construction. No pedestrian facilities will be available on McCaslin in the southbound direction during this construction, and bicyclists will need to travel through the roundabout to proceed south on McCaslin.
A temporary walk will be available in the northbound direction for bicyclists and pedestrians, but care should be taken when traveling through this construction zone. There will be periodic lane closures on McCaslin in order to complete street light installation and landscape work.
Please be advised that the speed limit will remain 25 mph in this area during this construction and there will be flaggers present to coordinate temporary stops to allow for construction vehicle crossings. The
Sport Stable and
Downtown Superior will continue to be accessible via the temporary road located north of the roundabout, but southbound traffic desiring to access this road will proceed through the roundabout to make a U-turn to head north on McCaslin and then make a right at this road.
Thank you for your patience during the roundabout construction.

|
A contractor will be making
concrete repairs at about two dozen locations throughout Town. Nearby residents will be contacted several days in advance of repairs near their homes. Please be aware of these construction activities.
Part of this project will entail installation of a
pedestrian crossing on Rock Creek Parkway near the Safeway entrance. Part of the median will be removed and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) installed at this location, which will connect the two bus stops on either side of Rock Creek Parkway. Lane closures will take place during construction.
In addition,
concrete modifications and patching will be performed on the east side of McCaslin Blvd. at Marshall to accommodate a third northbound through lane on McCaslin through the Marshall intersection. Lane closures will take place during construction.
|
|
Striping and Pavement Marking Operations
|
|
The Town’s contractor will be performing
striping on primary streets at night throughout Town in August. Installation of arrows, symbols and crosswalks will mostly occur during daylight hours within temporary work zones.
Please be careful driving through these work zones.

Historical Commission Corner
|
|
Youngsters in Superior start back to school this month and we suggest that a visit to the
Superior Historical Museum would fit nicely into your child’s return to school. The
Museum has a room dedicated to education history in Superior. In it you will find photos of 8th grade graduating classes, school projects from the 1940’s, an exhibit on the graduating class of 1942 and the another exhibit featuring Town’s beloved teacher,
Miss Edith Oerman.
The
Museum is open on
Saturday, August 5th from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Visitors can also explore the kitchen, bedroom and living room all representing mine camp life in the 1930’s.
We plan to have the
Superior Volunteer Fire Department 1942 Chevrolet fire truck parked outside the Museum that day, weather permitting. Look for the beautiful bright red vehicle with striking gold leaf lettering. Let it guide you to the Museum at 2nd and Maple Streets in Original Superior.
Any questions, contact
Bryan Meyer, Town Staff, at
303-499-3765 or
Larry Dorsey, Commission Chair, at

Happy Anniversary to the
US 36 Express Lanes Project
This time last year, we were celebrating the completion of
CDOT’s US 36 Express Lanes Project, one of the largest construction projects in Colorado! A model for the nation, CDOT’s US 36 Express Lanes Project gives travelers in Superior and beyond a choice to zip past traffic in the US Express Lanes, Bus Rapid Transit services or along the US 36 Bikeway for today and into the future.
We are proud to share
RTD’s Flatiron Flyer has played a critical role in increasing bus ridership. With stations serviced every 15 minutes and the regional bus route transporting 14,500 riders every day, it is no surprise that ridership is up by nearly 50 percent. While the Flatiron Flyer is transporting a record number of commuters every day, the
US 36 Express Lanes are playing a critical role in keeping people moving, whether on the bus or in a car. Since the opening of the
US 36 Express Lanes, CDOT has seen lane speeds increase on certain days by as much as 29 percent faster than ever before. Over 175,707 cyclists and pedestrians have traveled along the bikeway since the opening last year.
At
Commuting Solutions, we are proud of the innovation and collaboration that continues to propel our region into the future. We want to say thank you to our partners who played a critical role in CDOT’s US 36 Express Lanes Project and continue to advance multimodal transportation in our community.

August is back to school month for many households in Superior. Whether riding your bike, walking, catching the school bus or being driven to school a quick review of safety will get the school year started off right.
http://www.protection1.com/resources/back-to-school-safety/
Many children had back to school physicals making it easy to evaluate their car seat needs. If your child is under 8, by law they are still required to use a child restraint. Visit
https://www.codot.gov/safety/seatbelts-carseats/carseats to find out if your child is restrained properly. Rocky Mountain Fire District has certified car seat technicians on duty to assist you with your child’s safety. For a free check up call
303-494-3735 or email
chief@rockymountainfire.org to schedule an appointment. While the laws are age specific, height is the determining safety factor for moving out of a booster seat.
When you need a safe place to go, the fire station is open to you. We are here for our community. @RockyMtnFire
