This week's survey

(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results on the question of......
How to you cope when you get a printer service quoted at $18,000 after warranty and service agreements is over? Do you just not service the printer and wait until something happens or do you fork out the money?

  • Wait until something happens, after servicing mine every 6 months for 5 years to keep the head warranty in place, getting screwed every time, and having problems after every single service meaning unnecessary downtime, I told the agent to go fornicate himself when they wanted to service it out of warranty, 5 years later doing the servicing by myself from parts bought on ebay for 1/10 the price the machine has been running fault free for the last 5 years and is still going strong..I've probably saved at least 10k.
  • I can't imagine how anyone can justify a service costing that much. Surely they must be including a repair of some sort? If not, try another company.
As to the question; it depends on the price of the printer. If it was $30k and you had a 3 year warranty then hopefully it has paid for itself. In that case I would sit it out and look for a replacement when it started having issues. If it is a really expensive printer it may be worth servicing, but the question then arises - is every service this price, and how long between services?

  • If your machine is out of warranty source all your printer parts and components online - you will save thousands rather than purchasing through the Australian machine supplier. Also source an independent technician who is happy to do the work. Get a quote... Approach your original supplier with the savings and give them the opportunity to give you a more acceptable price... if they don't their loss.
I have personally done this and have saved thousands in machine parts.

  • Simply do it myself, the service tech is no different to me except they have a title and are charged out at an inflated rate. they don't have the monopoly on knowledge either
  • I'm a DIY person through necessity as well as geography/location. $18k is in my opinion, absurd. More detail is really needed to answer this question in its proper context. (Ian, Traditional Signs)
  • I do still have the service done & yes I fork out for it too. Had the black head replaced recently & it stuffed up within a week or two, I was told bad luck & that I don't use the printer enough. Being located in a regional area it will cost me over $1,800.00 to replace again, Includes airfares & Accom. for the service GUY, to replace it. Also had 2 brand new rubber belts for my laminator break with in hours of each other. I feel we are no longer of any importance because we have not bought new equipment lately as the printer & laminator still work well (when serviced properly). My business is signs, essentially that is what we do
  • My Roland printer stopped printing two colours. Warranty had expired. Roland refused to fix the problem - they said I had to buy a new printer ($20,000). I managed to fix the problem myself - one power transistor on the main board had shorted out. Replacement part cost: $2.
  • Gee wiz, $18K for a service, you could buy a good 2nd hand printer for that price. If I was you, that is what I would do.
  • Use a 3rd party technician to assist. (Gary, The Print Head Doctor)

Smile: It's only Monday!
(If you have a good joke or funny video for this section, please send to  - Thanks)

At a travel agency in Shanghai, I asked the Chinese girl behind the counter if she could escort me on a city tour and asked her for her mobile number so I could call her to make arrangements.
She gave me a big smile, nodded her head and said, "Sex sex sex, wan free sex for tonigh".
I replied, "Wow, you Chinese women are really hospitable!

A guy standing next to me overheard, tapped me on the shoulder and said, "What she really said was: 666136429
