Garces 70th Anniversary
Message from Vince Fanucchi
Garces Historian and Archivist

Garces Memorial High School first opened its doors 70 years ago on September 10, 1947. But you could say, that the school was Founded on Faith centuries before when a humble Catholic missionary, Father Francisco Garces, camped nearby, weeks before the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and described it a good site for a future mission. For the past 70 years,  the school that bears his name has stood as a testament to his faith and vision.

Over the decades, each generation of the Garces Family has made its own unique contributions to our renown as "the school of scholars and champions." And along the way, each of us has our own memories of special moments in the school's history. Mine, span over 50 years as a student, staff member and school historian.

In celebration of 70 years of "providing excellence in Catholic education", it will be my pleasure to share some of my favorite moments in the school's history in the weekly e-newsletter. I encourage all of you to also contribute your own reminisces of your time at "the little school on the hill." We are also trying to collect Garces memorabilia for the school archives, so get back to me if you would like to help with that. I look forward to hearing from all you during the upcoming school year.

RAM FACT:
Our teams where known as the Shamrocks when we opened in 1947, a moniker we inherited from St. Francis High before becoming the Rams a year later. The newspaper referred to us as the Rocks. Meanwhile, the first students were debating whether to call themselves Garcenites or Garcentonians.

Congratulations to Garces Isiah Fajardo on being selected to the USA Baseball's 15U Southern California Baseball Team for the National Team Identification Series (NTIS).  Players from across Southern California tried out with the hopes of being named to the SoCal 11U, 13U, 14U, 15U, 16U, and 17U teams. Garces Girls Water Polo Needs Players
No Experience Necessary

If your student has an interest in playing a great fall sport - especially if she is idle in the fall but plays a winter or spring sport - have her come out on Saturday, August 12th and try out for the Girls Water Polo Team.  Garces has a new head coach, Mr. Jason Gall.  Coach Gall joins us from CSUB where he coached the Women's Water Polo Team.  He is also the coach for the Bakersfield club water polo team. It is a great opportunity for our girls to work with a D1 college level coach and to be part of a sport that is a little bit of everything.  Coach Gall is happy to work with girls who have never played but are interested in learning about the sport.

Check Out The Gym Floor!

Garces Athletic Director, Mrs. Joan Finch, was determined that this was the summer to get the gym floor refurbished for our student athletes who play for our school in volleyball and basketball.  The project began once summer school was out - so it was a tight schedule.  The floor had to be completely sanded down, removing all the old paint, and there were places that needed patching. She also had a new electrical outlet installed located right under the score table.  Even though Mrs. Finch was technically on vacation during the month of July, she popped in almost every day to check on the project to make sure it would be done on time and within budget. The results speak for themselves. The gym floor looks beautiful.
Stephon Carter '09

Garces alumnus, Stephon Carter '09, was interviewed by KGET TV 17 Sports Anchor, Nick James, last week.  Stephon is pictured with his family and KGET's Nick James and Jim Scott.  After Garces, Stephon went on to play at CSUB and finished his career there as the all-time leading scorer - a designation he still holds today. After CSUB, Stephon went on to play professional basketball in Europe.  He currently plays for Cartegena (Spain).

Message from
Reverend Monsignor Perry Kavookjian
Garces Rector

Dear Garces Family & Friends:

I read the following in a Catholic journal:

"History has long taught that without teachers to announce the Gospel and educate the young, the church struggles to survive. Good teaching is essential to Catholic life. Good Catholic education is what attracts people to Jesus and his church. When it comes to education, nobody has a better track record than the church."

With that quote in mind, I want to welcome our students, families and faculty to another academic year at Garces. Our goal, as a Catholic school, is to attract people (especially our students) to Christ. We do this not by forcing our religion upon others nor simply by imparting textbook information. We attract students to Christ by demonstrating to them how to live and think in such a way that leads them to living a holy and fulfilled life. Put in another way, our goal as a Catholic school is to help students get to Heaven.  This may sound somewhat trite, but it is the overarching motivation behind everything we do as a Catholic school.

That is why it is the responsibility of both parents and teachers to be united in this spiritual effort.  We are not in the business of simply preparing young people for the possibility of attending a prominent university or having a prosperous career (most other schools can do that).  Rather, our business is the business of God: to instill in the hearts and minds of our students the Gospel values and virtues that will guide them through this life and into the next.

As we begin another school year, I call upon parents, teachers, coaches, administrators and, of course, our students, to share this common vision. We will not be perfect at it, but we will be blessed for trying.

Welcome back! Go Rams!

Msgr. Perry Kavookjian
