Fellow Journeyers,
What an exciting service we shared this past Sunday! Gratitude and Appreciation to Andy Hogg, and his  celebrants Sam P. and Carleton S. for another rollicking edition of the Rock n Roll service at Beacon.  It is not often that one gets to experience an expression come to life, but yes indeed, this trio had folks dancing in the aisles last week. Thank you again Andy, Sam and Carleton for a heartfelt and moving good time.
During this month of August, I will be introducing some of our new programming Touchstones, which will begin in September.  Here is an excerpt of some of the ideas and philosophies of the program.  Some potential for what this new community programming may provide to us here at Beacon.
"T he Touchstones Project supports a whole-church approach that
Uses an annual theme to weave monthly themes together;
Uses a monthly theme to connect worship and lifespan religious education in deep and creative ways;
Helps engage children, youth, and adults regardless of the level of involvement or attendance pattern;
Addresses the developmental and faith-formation needs of all ages;
Affirms Unitarian Universalist principles, sources & values;
Cultivates Unitarian Universalist identity & commitment;
Incorporates theological reflection, spiritual practice, and the work of justice within each theme;
Emphasizes spiritual maturity & resilience to help build community-most newcomers come seeking community;
Encourages engagement that transcends any program silos or cliques within the congregation;
Supports families as faith-formation centers;
Connects themes to activities to help put faith into action;
Helps newcomers better understand the value of what the congregation offers, which invites and supports membership.
Launched in September 2012, The Touchstones Project's mission is equipping and growing Unitarian Universalist congregations." (The Touchstones Project, 2017)
Beacon has been utilizing monthly themes for service development for several years now with the Worship Associate Team, Interim and Called Ministry.  The Touchstones project will support this work with monthly themes and support materials as well as incorporating an annual theme.
"The Touchstones Project is adding an annual theme to provide a focus for the year and to help weave the monthly themes together. The theme for 2017-2018 will be " Reimagining the Common Good."
The idea of the Common Good emerged in Ancient Greece. It figured prominently in the Federalist Papers that shaped the U.S. Constitution. James Madison argued for the need for wise, discerning political leaders in search of the Common Good. The Common Good should be so much more than "common" and so much better than "good."

As a country, we face formidable challenges. Foremost among them is a polarization driven by political, racial, religious, cultural, and socio-economic differences that only seem to grow wid-er. There is no consensus around a vision of the Common Good, nor a sustained dialogue that seeks to forge a consensus.

This annual theme is the year-long warp, while each monthly theme is the weft (or woof) that we will weave back and forth to create a tapestry on a loom of Unitarian Universalism that ex-plores what is "good" and should be "common." A new articulation of the Common Good, which is urgently needed, requires religious imagination and political will. We invite you to join in this important exploration and conversation by adding your voice, wisdom, and imagination." (The Touchstones Project, 2017)

Grateful to be on the journey with you,
Blessed Be,
Rev. Kevin

#1071 On The Dusty Earth Drum by Jason Shelton set to text by John Seamon Cotter, Jr., a talented playwright, journalist, and poet, was born and reared in Louisville, Kentucky. The son of journalist, playwright, poet, teacher and community developer Joseph Seamon Cotter, Sr., the younger Cotter's education began with his sister Florence Olivia teaching him to read. Cotter graduated from Louisville's Central High School in 1911, where his father was the school principal and his teacher. His mother, Maria F. Cox, was also a teacher at the school. Cotter attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee for two years before being stricken with tuberculosis, a disease that earlier claimed the life of his sister Florence in 1914.   Joseph Cotter, Jr., completed a collection of one-act plays and poetry during the last seven years of his life. He also wrote one play, On the Fields of France, a protest play in one act which was published in 1920 after his death. Cotter died of tuberculosis in Louisville in 1919 at the age of 24.

#123 Spirit of Life by Carolyn McDade is offered again as our body movement and voice meditation practice.

#1064 Blue Boat Home by Peter Mayer.  I am sharing a blog post I found by RIck Brown in 2012.  "Since joining my church family at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lansing in 2011, there is a song by Peter Mayer entitled "Blue Boat Home" that we sing now and then, that I love every time I hear it/sing it. The melody comes from an old hymn, but the lyrics were written to emphasize the fragile and timeless beauty of our lovely planet.  While Mr. Mayer's original version is wonderful, there is something about singing "Blue Boat Home"  in unison with fellow UU members in church that is even more uplifting and inspiring. As an environmentalist, I have found there are few songs which express the loveliness of our planet more than Mr. Mayer's song."

ANNOUNCEMENT!
We will feature one more music-centric service this summer on August 13th.
It will be in similar fashion to the music and worship service we shared a couple of weeks ago at Beacon.  Choir members shared their selections.  This time, I would like to invite any and all of you to participate.  If you would like to share a hymn with the congregation, please email me and tell me the title.  Be prepared to say a short introduction or why this particular hymn is important/memorable to you.  (less than 2 minutes please.)

Email your hymn to share on  August 13th to  [email protected] - please reply no later than  August 6th.  Thanks!!! Adrianne Anning
In Community
Dear Beacon Members and Friends,
During my first year with you, I have come to understand that we are a busy and mobile community.  Often there are several of our members and friends away for a season, or for an extended trip.  Sometimes just the events of a given month or a week preclude being in attendance on Sundays for a few weeks.  To support our knowledge and caring of one another in community, I am working with Heather and our Greeting team to establish this section of our Weekly E-news; whereby we might share some of the spoken Joys and Concerns on a Sunday with others who are not in the Sanctuary on Sunday morning.
I wish to offer gratitude for the greeter team and volunteers who began this effort this past spring by adding a detail to their Sunday mornings. Each Sunday one of our greeters has been writing down in our Joys and Concerns book the spoken messages thus supporting me to be fully present and listening to each voiced share.  Then during the following week, I am able to review these and reach out as needed and be in touch with folks.  I will continue this aspect of pastoral care, but I believe and have seen modeled in other communities that this brief mention of shared Joys and Concerns in the E-news provides for community building at large.  If there is ever a time you wish your shared message on a Sunday morning not to be included in the following weeks E-news, simply let me know, contact the office.  Together let us trial this new endeavor for the fall and we can see how it goes. Blessings.

And Now For Something Different - New Art At Beacon

For July And August we are displaying the exciting work of textile artist and man about town Jamie Hasapis. The pieces in this exhibit were created using a technique called "snow-dyeing". Fabric is covered with 8" - 10" of snow and then dyes are applied. As the snow melts the dye is absorbed randomly creating color, design and texture. "I never know what the end result will be....when I open the bundles I have these incredible gifts that I get to share."
In addition to his art, Jamey is a musician, singer and actor. He is also the host of Radio Sunnyside's Community Conversation  on Monday mornings at  10 a.m.
