Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

"The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart. Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. The month of August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The physical heart of Mary is venerated (and not adored as the Sacred Heart of Jesus is) because it is united to her person and is the seat of her love (especially for her divine Son), virtue, and inner life. Such devotion is an incentive to a similar love and virtue."

" On October 31, 1942, Pope Pius XII made a solemn Act of Consecration of the Church and the whole world to the Immaculate Heart. Let us remember this devotion year-round, but particularly through the month of August."

LOS ANGELES ANGELS OF ANAHEIM: Angels Scholars

Congratulations!!!

In 2006, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim began an effort which would allow them to transcend the realm of baseball into the field of community service. The values of perseverance, compassion, and above all, the unmitigated power of education continue to flourish through the Angels' college scholarship foundation. They began awarding partial and full scholarships to students in Orange County enrolled in grades 6-12 who embodied these values while demonstrating exemplary academic achievements. In 2016, Sacred Heart High School became a part of this incredible opportunity.

In 2017 six members of the Sacred Heart High School graduating class were nominated for a four-year scholarship to the college of their choice. After the nomination process, Alexis Huerta and Cynthia Romero were chosen to submit an application which, along with a few personal essays, compiled all of their efforts throughout high school including grades, GPA, community service, recommendations, clubs, and other school-wide activities. Once these were reviewed they were notified that both had successfully made it to the interview stage. After completing the final interview with the owner of the Angels, Arte Moreno, Cynthia and Alexis received news that they were awarded a full scholarship to the university of their choice.

Alexis Huerta '17
"I remember feeling a rush of emotions: relief, shocking astonishment, and an overwhelming excitement for my future. This scholarship is a profound opportunity. It is one which removes the constraints of financial burdens, allowing me to make even the most impossible of my endeavors a reality. One of the University of Washington's founding principles is to 'Be Boundless,' and that is exactly what this scholarship will allow me to be. I am eternally grateful for my family, Mr. Saborio, and all the teachers and faculty at Sacred Heart whose endless support and guidance made this a reality. It was through the mentorship of teachers like Mrs. Brown who instilled in me an ardent desire for education while inspiring in me a bold and compassionate spirit. From here, I plan on majoring in Neuropsychology. Though I do not know where my life story is exactly going, I have no doubt it will include a commitment to family, justice, and education."

Thank you Alexis for sharing your experience with us.

Congratulations Comets!!!

Dominican High School Preaching Conference

By Andrewa Gutierrez '18

We are all called to be preachers in one-way or another. In its mission to empower and inspire young Catholic women in the Dominican tradition, Sacred Heart High School participates in the annual Dominican High School Preaching Conference. This Conference empowers high school students to discover and deepen the preacher within themselves through prayer, study, community and interaction with other members of the Dominican Family.  As a part of the Campus Ministry team, both I and club president, Linda Tran, were given the opportunity to attend the conference in the small town of Adrian, Michigan. We were both tremendously excited to make the trip and be more engrossed in the Dominican family. We were very blessed to be traveling with the co-presidents of the Campus Ministry team of our sister school, San Gabriel Mission High School. Together the four of us bonded and formed our own little family away from home.

Upon our arrival, we were introduced to new ways to share our faith through preaching. We were taught valuable life lessons while also meeting other students, putting faith into action and having fun! Every morning all 150 students from Dominican schools across the country, including Puerto Rico and Australia gathered together to pray and then progressed to daily activities. In these activities, we explored the significance and meaning of the Word in our lives, by actively reading and analyzing Bible passages. Creative forms of prayer, such as making mandalas, tai-chi, paper folding, and crocheting mats for the homeless, were introduced to us, so that we may take back our new talents to our schools.

One of my fondest memories of our trip was the opportunity given to us on our service day. All the students were separated into different groups and were set out to different locations, including the Salvation Army and a facility for people with special needs. I was fortunate enough to be able to volunteer by painting a house for Habitat for Humanity. We had an immense amount of fun and were blown away with the prospect of that house one day becoming someone's home. After a long morning of hard work, we were treated to the regionally famous, "Spotted Cow Ice Cream". Later during our trip, we met the Adrian Dominican Sisters who had prayed for us and written us a letter to welcome us to Michigan. We ended our trip by celebrating Mass and sharing our action plans for our own schools.

Embrace, Empower, Inspire...

Cross Country 2017

By Elizabeth Hernandez '16

MORE MILES MEANS MORE SMILES

Thursday, July 28, 2017 was a special day for the courageous Comet Cross Country Team. What started as a warm summer morning in Lincoln Heights ended up being an even warmer evening in Bishop- a small town 227 miles north of Los Angeles. No, the team did not run up there (we traveled in the school vans!), but each Comet did have to run well to secure a spot in this trip. Altitude Training Camp is for the most promising and dedicated runners on the team. The girls, along with Coach Pang, Coach Vargas and alumnae runners Ashley Flores '16 and Elizabeth Hernandez '16 ran over 70 miles in the course of one week at 4,000 ft -11,000 ft elevation. The first few days were spent camping under the clear skies in Bishop. After a time trial at a local high school and discovering the trail along South Lake, the group visited Jack's for a well deserved home style breakfast.

Now, the Comets were off to Mammoth for the remainder of their time in the Eastern Sierra. Mountains were climbed, trails were explored and limits were tested. The breathtaking views add peace of mind while running in Mammoth. Training at such great heights is physically taxing, but with great risk comes great reward and the reward the Comets long for is racing Thanksgiving weekend at the CIF State Championship.

Returning to sea level meant joining the rest of the team and sharing their new sense of competing and focus with them.

We ask that you keep the team in prayer as they anxiously return home to share what they have learned and to continue their training.
Veritas Retreat Welcome
In the Dominican Tradition...

Campus Ministry Leadership Retreat

By Celeste Jalbert, Campus Minister

Every summer the new members of our Campus Ministry Leadership Team participate in the Veritas Retreat for study, training, community, prayer and service (the four Pillars of Dominican life). This year the retreat was once again held at the Motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, in Fremont, California. Four schools attend each year: Immaculate Conception Academy, San Gabriel Mission High School, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, and our own Sacred Heart High School.

Veritas Retreat

This year's new attending campus ministers were: Adriana Landeros, Daisy Flores, Danielle Vazquez, Destiny Rodriguez, Melanie Garcia, Sonia Chiman, and Wynette Reyes. We were blessed to have two Comets, Bianca Garcia '18 and Linda Tran '18, help lead the retreat. Linda is also the Campus Ministry Co-President for the 2017-2018 school year. Both young women attended Veritas last year, and have also attended the National High School Preachers Conference held annually in Adrian, Michigan.

The Veritas Retreat was a full five days, with a lot of information, great ideas and fun. We look forward to a great year!

To participate in the empowerment of "Tomorrow's Catholic Woman" today:

Tomorrow's results are created by today's dreamers. Many people dream of a way to leave a legacy that would help Sacred Heart High School grow into the future. Some find that a good way to accomplish this goal is to designate Sacred Heart as the beneficiary of all or part of a retirement plan or life insurance policy.
