This week's survey

(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

  • Good idea, the more training options we have, the better. As long, of course, that the training is relevant to today's industry and the price is OK. If private training existed and was considered to be good, it would be good for the industry both in training and recruitment of young talent.
  • I always thought the sign companies supplied private training relevant to their own daily operations.
  • Perhaps the best private training should be conducted by sign/print companies exclusively, in the same way a father teaches his son or daughter. I know there are apprenticeship schemes but it should be left to the company to do ALL the teaching. Such companies should of course have to reach a teaching competency standard. Such companies should then receive a tax break.
  • I would not support private training. What we need to do is fund our TAFE systems properly for a bloody change. The support for this profession gets cuts more and more. I had to do my block release pracs in a room no bigger than a 2 car garage with stage painters, AND STAGE PAINTERS GOT PREFERENCE OVER A LEGITIMATE TRADE LIKE OURS!! We have a national training package that is so confusing and so irrelevant. Lets start there. If you encourage private institution training you will get backyard cowboys ripping off the funding system in an industry they've never got their hands dirty in, at the detriment of the apprentice. I have heard of one well known company that has been discussions with one of the state's TAFE institutions on providing and sponsoring a training package. I have very grave feelings about this idea as I myself have experienced and fixed some of the work this company's employees have done. Fund the TAFE system better toward our trade and perhaps we can get back to the days of the Sign Training College that once existed in Balaclava St, Woolloongabba. Now that was a TAFE Training branch the industry could be proud of, and would gladly send my apprentices to.
