Detox diets; are they safe?
from the Desk of Susan Cutshaw M.S., Nutritionist
Detoxification diets have become more popular and trendy as a method of eliminating unwanted toxins from our bodies. But what are the toxins and are the diets safe or effective?
There are two main types of molecules or "toxins" which the body removes or detoxifies 24/7:
- Endotoxins are byproducts of normal metabolism like lactic acid.
- Exotoxins come from outside the body such as environmental toxins, tobacco smoke, dioxin, phthalates (plastic), and parabens present in cosmetics and lotions.
Toxins can be dangerous to our overall health and wellbeing, that's why they need to be converted into substances that can be eliminated from the body. Individuals differ in their ability to detoxify based on their environment, diet, lifestyle, overall health, and genetics. It's this rational that has led to the growing interest in detox diets.
Many detox diets advocate removing all processed foods plus foods that may be sensitive for many, such as peanuts, gluten, and dairy. They encourage eating organically grown veggies and fruit, non-gluten grains, nuts and seeds, and lean protein. Other diets however recommend fasting, which may interfere with the body's own detoxification system and could be a potential risk for some people as well.
To date, there is no scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of detoxification diets in humans. Before starting any detox regime, it's important to work with a qualified health care professional to insure safety and success.
Robin Foroutan MS, RDN suggests the following tips to support the body's natural detoxification:
- Adequately hydrate with water
- Consume 5-9 serving of fruits and vegetables each day
- To support detox pathways, include cruciferous veggies, berries, artichokes, garlic, onions, leeks, turmeric and drinking green tea
- Consuming sufficient amounts of protein is necessary to provide ensure adequate amounts of glutathione, a detoxing enzyme
- Consume fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, and kefir or take a probiotic to maintain healthy gut microbes
