Yogis unite for caregivers on August 18

We are delighted that Kate Doran, owner of Savannah Power Yoga, is hosting the second annual Yoga Relay, silent auction, and party (think DJ, appetizers and adult beverages!) benefiting our Edel Caregiver Institute

Read Kate's personal story about why she is passionate about supporting family caregivers in this article from The Skinnie, and consider forming or joining a team of yogis to complete 100 sun salutations at this fun event suitable for any level of practitioner. Sponsors include Visiting Angels and Service Brewing Co. Full details and registration information  here.
Our temporary relocation

Our homecare and administrative staff are now temporarily housed in the east wing of Hospice House while we plan the construction of new offices next to the Demere Center for Living on Business Center Drive. 19 patient beds remain available in Hospice House on Eisenhower Drive and, as always, care is mostly provided in our patients' homes throughout Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, Liberty and Long counties.

We have sold our administrative building and warehouse (formerly the Gas Light Co. at 1674 Chatham Parkway) to Coastal Canvas as they were much too large for our needs. With the proceeds from the sale, we can build to our own specifications without incurring any debt.
Help for children impacted by gun violence
Recently, our bereavement counselors had the privilege of partnering with Savannah Impact, a specialized unit of the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department focusing on "high risk" and "at risk" youth. Our counselors offered grief support to 30 kids who have experienced the trauma of a family member being shot or dying by some other violent means. One teen said,  "The thing I feared most before my loved one died was having my phone taken away. The thing I fear most now is bullets."  Another teen said, "I just don't believe in God anymore. Why would God let my brother be shot?"

So these kids in our community are dealing with anger, living in fear, questioning justice, and sometimes wondering what revenge would look like. Our "We the Living"  program is designed to both give them the tools needed to cope with their grief and to teach them how to use these tools in the future as they deal with stressful situations. We want to help them to make good decisions and know where to go for help and safety.   I f you know of children and teens in need of this complimentary, confidential grief support, or if you are interested in becoming a community based volunteer, please call Full Circle at 912.303.9442.
Golfing to remember Robbie

The 14th annual Robbie Smith Golf Outing will be this Saturday, August 12 at The Club at Savannah Harbor. Robbie Smith was a vibrant, fun, sports-loving young man who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1992. His family and friends organize a fun-filled day of golf in his memory and in gratitude for the care we provided during the last months of his life.

$100 per person includes lunch, prizes, and beverages on the course; $125 per person also includes two Mulligans, one raffle ticket, Tee Buster on Hole 14, Eagle Putt on Hole 7, and a "Fantasy" scratch-off card for a chance to win a complimentary round of golf. Players may register here or call Kevin Ainsworth at 912.655.1933 or Steve Proper at 912.660.8046.
A message from our Foundation's VP

" Although there are thousands of hospice providers across America, hospices are not all alike. And although to be certified as a hospice means minimum standards must be met, Hospice Savannah is so much more than those minimums. In fact, Hospice Savannah is so much more because of the charitable support it receives.
Every gift we receive, no matter the size, makes a difference in the level of life-changing care our organization provides our community. Contributions directly impact those seeking the support and services of Hospice Savannah, the Steward Center for Palliative Care, the Edel Caregiver Institute, Full Circle Grief and Loss Center and so much more. With your help, we can continue to make a lasting difference in the lives of people who need us the most."

News for art lovers!

Similarly, the three artists in our mixed media summer show at our Hospice Savannah Art Gallery will donate a portion of their sales. Stop by during regular business hours to see Liza Crowley Judson's photography, Doris Grieder's fiber pieces, and Christina Edward's encaustics.

And mark your calendar for Arts Resource Collective 's 4th Annual Artists and Artisans Tour on November 2. Tickets for this special evening will be available in the fall with proceeds benefiting ARC's outreach and the many extra programs and community services offered by Hospice Savannah.

New grief support group

Full Circle's Betsy Kammerud will facilitate a new bereavement support group, "Alternative Path to Grief"  commencing August 10 for four consecutive Thursdays. Adults who have experienced the death of a loved one are invited to join others in exploring what happens when creative, activity-oriented methods are used to explore their grief journey.

Betsy says, "Processing grief and emotions can be much more than 'just talk' when we lower our adult barriers and release the need to be in control. We will incorporate music and mindfulness, art activities, and sharing."  The group meets from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Full Circle, 6000 Business Center Drive. Call 912.303.9442 to register or get more information.
