Dear friends -
Our companion Jewish communities are having the most difficult of summers. Hot on the heels of our information about how to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey, I wanted to let you know that I am in touch with a number of my colleagues in Florida as they brace for Hurricane Irma to make landfall. Two of them have evacuated their families but plan to remain with the folk from their communities who are unable to evacuate. Rest assured that we will be keeping you informed as news becomes available.
In the meantime, as I said on Shabbat, I very much hope that every single member of this community will have taken some steps to help or support those affected. In case you have not yet been able to do so,
here is the link to the Federation web page that is being regularly updated:
I know you join me in my prayers for my colleagues, their communities and all of the wider communities of every size, Jewish and not Jewish, that are in trouble.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff, Joe Lopinto,
to speak at Gates of Prayer
Jefferson Parish Sheriff, Joe Lopinto, is holding a town hall with/for the Greater New Orleans Jewish community at Congregation Gates of Prayer on Sunday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome.
At this town hall, citizens are invited to share concerns or ask public safety questions.
Sheriff Lopinto started his career as a regular beat cop and then worked his way into the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office (JPSO) Detective Bureau - during this time he was also a law student at Loyola University. He later left JPSO to practice law. He was later elected as a state representative to the Louisiana state legislature. Mr. Lopinto served on the legislature's Criminal Justice committee, and authored many bills regarding Public Safety issues. In 2016, JPSO Sheriff Newell Normand asked Mr. Lopinto to return to JPSO as a full-time legal advisor. Because of his proven abilities, Sheriff Normand appointed Joe Lopinto as his successor.
To learn more, please contact Caitrin Gladow at the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, at 504-780-5614 or at
[email protected].
