This Sunday we will kick off our Life Beyond Sermon series with guest preacher the Reverend Dr. Ken McFayden and the topic Life Beyond Belief. Dr. McFayden has recently begun a new school year in his role as the Academic Dean of Union Presbyterian Seminary and Professor of Ministry and Leadership Development and looks forward to joining us for the backpack blessing!
Dr. McFayden's sermon is entitled "The Shaping Power of Instruction
." Scriptures are Psalm 1 and Matthew 22:34-40. Our Lay Worship Leader is Norma Shuskey.

Blessing of the Backpacks this Sunday!
All students, teachers, faculty are invited to participate.
Following the Blessing of the Backpacks, children kindergarten through 7th grade will leave for Sunday School.
While children of all ages are welcome in worship, a nursery for infants through children pre-kindergarten age is available, opening at 9:30 am. You may ask the ushers for directions.

We welcome back
the jubilant voices of the Covenant Choir along with two new soloists for this season, Kiko Weinroth (soprano) and Aaron Lange (tenor). The introit Laudate Nomen Domini is by the English renaissance composer and clergy-person Christopher Tye (c.1505-1573), who is also known for composing the hymn tune "Winchester Old." The New York native Harold Friedell (1905-1958) was organist and choirmaster of St. Bartholomew's church in Manhattan and taught at Union Theological Seminary and Julliard. Our ensembles are still open to all inquiring musicians. Please speak with Jonathan Moyer or Matthew Garrett for more information.

Fall Worship and Education Theme:
Life Beyond...
Death s as much a part of life as birth, love, illness, and work. Yet we live in a culture that often acts as though death can be avoided. What can our faith in One who died and was raised teach us about how God equips us to understand and face death - both our own death and the death of those we love? How can we draw alongside those who are nearing the end of life in a way that brings meaning and comfort to the dying process? How can we better support those who are grieving the death of loved ones or who are suffering despair to the point of considering suicide?
This fall in worship and education, we will explore the idea of
Life Beyond
...life beyond death, but also life beyond the things that lead to death, both literal and spiritual, including despair, addiction, and grief.
The series will culminate on October 29 with a lecture by Ellen Goodman, founder of the Conversation Project, which guides people in having meaningful conversations that lead to decisions about end of life care.

Thank you to Venerine Branham for bringing me to the Church of the Covenant. Thank you office colleagues and members of the church for putting up with me for the past 28 years. I have learned many things and have met many wonderful people. The love and compassion that I have felt will never be forgotten. I am entering into a new phase of my life but I will always have the memories of my time spent with all of you. I am not saying goodbye because we will all meet again.

Pray for those impacted by gun violence
Since a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012,
killing 26 people, 20 of them children; 815 people in Cuyahoga County have been killed by guns. Since last month, 15 more individuals have died by gun violence in Cuyahoga County. Four of those who died were by suicide.
Believing God calls us to be peacemakers, by Session action, each month we pray for people affected by gun violence and to reduce the evil of gun violence in our nation, marked by the tolling of the tower bell. Join us in this time of increased concern over deadly gun violence in our county, country, and world, in remembering and praying that God will show us the way to a new commitment to Peace on Earth. The Church of the Covenant partners with God Before Guns, a multi-faith coalition of individuals and faith communities created in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, to reduce gun violence.

performed by Covenant and University Circle Carillonneur George Leggiero and guests on the 15,000 lb McGaffin Carillon of 47 bronze bells resume Friday, September 15. Tours of the tower follow the concerts.

Join the Reverend Nancy Lynch for a six-week series of classes combining yoga and interfaith scripture, meditation, and prayer, seeking to unite spirit, mind, and body with God. Reformation Yoga is a spiritual practice that invites us to look within ourselves and be more intentional about turning our attention towards God.
No experience is required, and all are welcome

We are excited to welcome Martha Bromelmeier home to Cleveland!
This is Martha's first time designing for Great Lakes Theater since college when she was a summer intern. She has numerous theater credits in a diversity of genres and has styled many leading ladies including Patti LuPone, Glenn Close, Audra McDonald, and Anna Kendrick. She is a Cleveland Heights High graduate, has a BFA from Ohio Universities Honors Tutorial College and an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University. Martha, the daughter of John and Gale Bromelmeier, is a "child of the Covenant."

The Saturday Tutoring Program needs your help.
We need Covenant Ambassadors! As an Ambassador for the Covenant we would like you to arrive by 9:30 Saturday mornings and do the following as needed:
- Help visitors. People walk in seeking directions to other buildings in the area or wanting to visit the sanctuary. They want bus tickets or food, or seek the times the Cache is open. There can be people arriving for wedding or funeral preparations.
- Help parents of STP students get to the library and reception room. Some parents sit in their cars during tutoring. Others prefer to sit upstairs where coffee, tea, and water are provided. Ambassadors will escort them to the upstairs area.
- Distribute literature to tutors, parents, and visitors. This is an opportunity to distribute fliers about Covenant events: Trunk-or-Treat, Thanksgiving dinner or simply information about Sunday service.
- Recognize student and tutor achievements. Interact with the tutors and kids, listen to what they've accomplished, and congratulate them.
