Five Tips to Keep Your Family Safe from the Flu
Protecting yourself from this highly contagious illness isn't complicated. The best advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) comes down to this: Arm yourself with a flu shot, good health habits and some common sense to protect you and your family.

1. Get a flu shot. Ask your doctor which vaccine is best for you.
2. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly.
3. Avoid touching your nose and mouth to prevent spreading germs.
4. Maintain distance. The air around infected people is contagious.
5. Stay home. Going out when you're ill exposes others to the flu.

Cooking Up Family Fun
Sit down at the table and eat as a family as often as possible. It's the best way to model healthy eating and creates a positive home environment as well. Studies show that kids who regularly participate in family meals get better grades, are more confident and secure, and are less inclined to experiment in risky behaviors for attention. Kids learn what, when and how to eat by watching their parents and will form their own habits based on parents' choices.
  • Eat healthy foods: If you want your kids to eat healthy, you must do the same. Don't force kids to eat veggies eat them yourself to show the kids how much you like veggies.
  • If you overeat, your family will overeat: Stick to healthy portion sizes so your kids learn how much they should eat.
  • Don't tell your family you are on a "diet": Tell them you are eating healthy because it will keep you healthy, strong and provide lots of energy. It's not about being thin....it's about being healthy.
  • Set a regular time and place for meals: If your busy schedule makes it too tough to stick to a set plan every day, try scheduling family meals on less busy days. Set a goal of 2-3 set times and places for meals per week.
  • Set a time and place for snacks: Healthy, planned snacks give kids "go power" and replace unhealthy, unplanned snacking.
  • Turn off the TV during meals and snacks: TV is a distraction that keeps the family from talking to each other. It also keeps you from noticing how much you've eaten, or what's left on your plate.
  • Put dessert in its place - Occasional sweets are fine, but don't turn dessert into the main reason for eating dinner. When dessert is the prize for eating dinner, kids naturally place more value on the cupcake than the broccoli.

HEALTHY COOKING IDEAS
  • Use olive oil in place of other cooking oils.
  • Use reduced-fat versions of dairy milk, cheese, sour cream, yogurt, mayonnaise and creamy salad dressings.
  • Buy lean meat and trim the fat before cooking.
  • Rinse and drain cooked ground beef.
  • Rather than using seasoning salts, mix your own salt-free spices and herbs.
  • Replace sour cream or margarine with salsa as a baked potato topping.

Take A Family Cruise Along A Canal
While Phoenix is regarded as a new city, it was built on the ruins of an ancient civilization. Canals were the cornerstone that allowed the Hohokam people to transform the Salt River Valley into a fertile oasis for more than a millennium. Today, the Phoenix metro area has more than 180 miles of canals. That's more miles of waterways than Venice and Amsterdam combined!

What Does Wellness Mean to You?
Beatitudes Campus is a retirement community for active, independent senior living. The Campus offers several levels of care, including independent and assisted living in an apartment setting, as well as a 24-hour skilled nursing option with respite, rehabilitation, physical therapy and long term care. One "neighborhood" also serves residents with moderate to severe cases of dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

How long have you been at Beatitudes Campus?
12 years.

Do you have a wellness goal?
To be active every day to keep up with my children. I live near the base of South Mountain so hiking and running are big for me. I also volunteer at the Chris-Town YMCA teaching step aerobics on Saturdays and am a group exercise class junkie.

Which challenges do you face in achieving your goal?
Hitting the snooze button. If I don't get up early to exercise, it often doesn't happen later in the day and I miss the energizing feeling of starting my day off right.

How has your workplace helped you achieve your wellness goals?
Beatitudes Campus is great because we have a variety of healthy dining options onsite to choose from, we compete in fitness challenges together, and we have a culture of supporting the mind, body, and spirit of each staff member here.
