Hurricane Hospital Relief
Helping the cancer communities affected by Harvey and Irma

Credit: NBCNews.com
As Texas begins to heal from Hurricane Harvey and Florida braces for Hurricane Irma, we want to share resources for helping our fellow cancer control communities and the vulnerable populations they serve.

We were encouraged last week to see stories of people and systems working together to protect Harvey's most vulnerable victims -- including  patients  receiving  treatment for cancer  and other  life-threatening illnesses

For example, when Houston's MD Anderson Cancer Center partially closed  because of flooding, hospitals in Alabama and Louisiana welcomed patients to minimize disruptions in treatment.

We will be watching closely as  hospitals in Florida prepare for Hurricane Irma Learn how you can help -- and how cancer patients and providers can  prepare for an emergency  closer to home.

All-Member Webinar: Join Us Oct. 4
Help us identify areas of greatest need in cancer control in WI

The WI Cancer Council is embarking on what may be its most ambitious effort to date: winnowing the comprehensive, 13-priority WI CCC Plan into a streamlined "Implementation Action Pan" designed to accelerate progress in areas of greatest need.

WI Cancer Council members are strongly encouraged to attend an important all-member webinar Oct. 4 from 1-2 p.m. to provide input in what the Implementation Action Plan should include.

Members will learn about current cancer control activities and areas of progress across Wisconsin, and will gain helpful insight into the work other Council members are already doing.

Watch your email inboxes for more details, and register today for "The State of the State: Cancer Control in Wisconsin."
HPV Summits: A "Rare Opportunity"
Why the Summits matter -- and how you can get involved

T he HPV vaccine has been widely recommended since 2006. Yet most Wisconsin teens  still aren't getting the vaccine -- or the life-saving cancer prevention it provides.

The Wisconsin HPV Vaccine Summits hope to change that.

Next month, doctors, researchers, and advocates will gather in Green Bay and Eau Claire to share challenges and solutions to increasing Wisconsin's HPV vaccination rate. Registration for the day-long Summits costs $15.

HPV can cause multiple cancers, including cervical, vaginal, vulvar, anal, and penile. The HPV vaccine can prevent these cancers. But only 38% of boys and less than 54% of girls ages 13-17 in Wisconsin have completed the full two-dose HPV vaccination series.

Improving HPV vaccination rates also helps to reduce racial health disparities. Black and Latina women in Wisconsin are diagnosed with cervical cancer more than twice as often as white women, according to data from the US Cancer Statistics Working Group. This is one of the largest racial and ethnic disparities across all major cancer sites in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin HPV Vaccine Summits  "provide us a rare opportunity  to change the lives of an entire generation by preventing these common and devastating cancers," said UW pediatric infectious disease specialist James Conway.

Register today  for the HPV Vaccine Summits in Green Bay on Oct. 18, and Eau Claire on Oct. 26.
