ANAC members participated in the recent AFREhealth annual meeting, Leadership and Capacity Building for Health Professions Education and Research, held in Accra, Ghana. AFREhealth is a newly formed, interdisciplinary health professional organization that seeks to improve health care in Africa through research, education and capacity building. It seeks to build on the achievements of two previous initiatives, MEPI and NEPI, funded by the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Nursing leaders attended from across Africa, many of which are ANAC members.

Policy

ANAC is an Organizational Affiliate of the American Nurses Association (ANA). ANA recognizes that discrimination based on sexual orientation, sexual identity and gender expression in health care continues to be an issue. Many LGBTQ individuals have reported suffering some form of discrimination or bias when accessing health care services that impedes the ability of patients in this population to access needed health care services.  ANA has drafted a proposed position statement -- Nursing Advocacy for Gender Diverse Populations. ANAC members are invited to read and comment on the proposed draft. Deadline for comments is September 15.

Be part of the region's largest comprehensive HIV program.  As a nurse in the Infectious Disease Section of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, you'll join a fast-paced interdisciplinary team where you will have a balance between independent nursing practice and great teamwork. In this position, you'll develop expertise in two specialties: HIV and International Travel Health. HIV care has evolved dramatically in the past several years and this position is a great opportunity to work with a patient population where the focus is on maximizing health potential. Travel health clinicians conduct pre-travel health evaluations and prepare patients for safe international travel through immunizations, disease prevention and education. This role will also help coordinate the interdisciplinary care of patients and ensure appropriate overall care, family involvement and provide education and consultations to schools and the community.
