Hello Member,

September is a busy time here at RHAWA. It is planning and budgeting time. Staff is looking at what programs, services, and products we offer and how can we make them better in 2018. They are also exploring some new ideas we can vet and possibly offer to you next year. While we are busily working on all that, we haven't forgotten about you! Below you can find some of the offerings in September, including our very first digital event!
Digital Event: Criminal Records Conversation
Join us this evening, September 7th, from 6:30 - 8:30pm for a live-streaming online or in person for a discussion on criminal records, how they can be applied when considering tenants, and advice on what to do to protect yourself and your property if you are no longer allowed to consider criminal history in Seattle. Come prepared with questions you may have, log on, and learn how to best navigate the changing landscape of criminal records! This discussion will be an open forum to ask questions of our instructor, who will be going over some baseline information prior to opening up the floor to the members. We will be focusing this event on Q&A with members via online live-stream.
Questions? Drop Adam Purkey a line at apurkey@RHAwa.org or give him a call at (206) 905-0601.
At its full council meeting on August 14, Seattle City Council voted unanimously to enact an ordinance which prevents Seattle landlords from using criminal records when screening applicants for tenancy. The new law takes effect February 19, 2018.

Passage of the ordinance ends a process of public debate begun during the HALA stakeholder process where this issue received its own subcommittee task force aimed at addressing the barriers that criminal records screenings place in front of ex-offenders searching for housing.
Information for Tenants / Voter Registration
Did you know that landlords are now required to provide voter registration information to all tenants in Seattle? The City has updated its Information for Tenants document online to include this information for easy disclosure to residents at lease signing, and once an nually thereafter. The law requires that all existing residents receive a copy of the updated Information for Tenants within 30 days. It is our recommendation to email this link to your current residents today, using the most recent version of the Information for Tenants , and provide a copy to all new lease signings.

The Education You're Craving is Here...
We've executed a well-designed curriculum to meet the learning needs of Washington's independent landlords. Based on demands, our goals were focused in two parts: have more seminars + make them easier to access.
If there is anything we can ever do better, please contact me. Ideas for newsletters? Ways we could present the information better? New benefits you want to see? Suggestions? Please let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you.
