Weekly Reflection
How time flies! We have completed a whole month together! During this time I have had the pleasure of meeting with many of you individually for lunch, coffee, or in my office. I have heard some of your thoughts and dreams about how Epiphany can grow and shift, as well as many of the aspects and values of this church that you would like to remain intact. I am looking forward to more conversation and imagining together.
While much has been occurring internally, our external community has been shifting right before our eyes. The drama that unfolded in VA has forced us to uncover another layer of racism and its real impact on our country. Our brothers and sisters in Houston and the surrounding counties have called members of Epiphany to respond in recovery efforts, to pray, and for some, to tend to family members. I write this as another hurricane and West coast wildfires threaten life and property. And in our own backyard, we watch as protests mount in response to the repeal of DACA. Both our internal and external communities require a faithful response. I am drawn to the scripture in Matthew where Jesus tells the disciples that "whatever you have done to the least of these, you have done to me," as I reflect on this past month and the demands placed on faithful people.
There is so much need with regards to the climate, employment, housing, disaster relief, and reactions around race and class-- not too mention some of the needs of our own building and congregants. How do we respond to God's call to respond to the least of these when they call upon us?
There will be some upcoming events that will allow us discern collectively. My theology supports the notion that we act best out of relationship. When we know each other, we can better move together in faith. Homecoming is Sept. 17th, a time to re-engage, or to engage differently. Participating in the potluck, inviting folks we haven't seen in awhile, or inviting new folks are ways to develop relationships. Soon we will announce our stewardship campaign, our ministry fair, and a book study. These are all ways for us to begin to discern together how we can best meet the needs of the least of these.
I thank you for inviting me into this part of your faith journey. We have taken our first steps and I look forward to many more.

All are welcome to join. We will have a list of projects, the tools and materials needed to get them done and a willingness to pitch in and make things happen and have some fun together.

Empower the Homeless Walk
Sunday, September 24
All are invited to join us for this year's Walk to Empower the Homeless on Saturday, September 24. The walk will begin immediately following the 8:00am service. We will walk together from Epiphany to the White House and back. The walk usually takes about 30 minutes.
In conjunction with the Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington, this walk is an effort to raise funds to help end homelessness in our area.
If would like to support Samaritan Ministry and their work which directly impacts 1,000 homeless and downtown poor, please bring cash or a check for $25 payable to "Samaritan Ministry."
Any donations can be turned in to Susan Weinbeck, Rasheen Carbin or Lois Nembhard.
Friday Church Documentary
This story follows a young Pakistani Muslim visitor to Washington, DC who has his views about religious coexistence transformed after local Christians welcome him here at Epiphany.
Keeping Epiphany Clean
 In our ongoing efforts to be a sanitary place of hospitality, please ensure that all used dishes are cleaned before leaving the building.
Also, in continuing with sanitation, all pew cushions will be removed from the church next week.

October 4, 7:00pm
Join the Youth Service Opportunities Project at their Fall Social October 4th at 7:00 p.m. right here at Church of the Epiphany. All ticket proceeds go directly towards programming engaging youth volunteers in service to the homeless and hungry in our community. Tickets available here.

How might you become more involved in the mission and ministry of our parish? There is so much going on at Epiphany and we are so grateful for the contributions you all offer towards making this happen. There are a few areas where we could really use your help! Please have a look at the list below and think where you might feel you could benefit from and contribute to the life of our community.
The Welcome Table team are looking for more volunteers to help in the kitchen and dining room. Please contact Maria Hunter if you are interested in getting involved in this important aspect of our ministry at Epiphany (

Liturgical Leaders: We are always looking for people to help with the important ministries that make our Sunday worship possible. We welcome new additions to the ranks of greeters, ushers, readers, lay Eucharistic ministers, as well as the flower guild, and altar guild.
