Experts in photography, graphic design and digital media will be on hand to share their expertise in creating engaging visuals for some of the world's top scientific publications during the LSU College of Science Visual Communications Workshop, Thursday, September 7, 10 am - 2 pm, Hill Memorial Library.

This workshop is open to all College of Science faculty, staff, graduate students and postdocs.

Celebrate the start of the new school year and the football season during the College of Science Geaux Science Block Party, September 7, 4:30 p.m., Tower Drive.  All College of Science faculty, students and staff are invited to attend.  Join us for fun, food, games, and cool College of Science giveaways.

• Museum of Natural Science Special Saturdays 2017-2018

"Special Saturdays" at the LSU Museum of Natural Science is a STEM program focused on introducing children and their parents to the world of natural science. > More

 

 

• Guoli Ding, professor in the Department of Mathematics, has been named Hubert Butts Professor of Mathematics. Ding joined the mathematics department last year. He received his PhD in 1991 in Operations Research at Rutgers University, and has contributed more than 65 publications to mathematics, operations research and computer science. > More

•  Peter Doran, John Franks Endowed Chair in the Department of Geology & Geophysics at LSU, has contributed to new research that shows that an abnormal season of intense glacial melt in 2002 triggered multiple distinct changes in the physical and biological characteristics of Antarctica's McMurdo Dry Valleys over the ensuing decade. The research findings were published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution. > More

• Kenneth Lopata, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, has received an Early Career Award from the U.S. Department of Energy. This program, now in its eighth year, supports the development of individual research programs of outstanding scientists, at universities and national laboratories, early in their careers and stimulates research careers in the disciplines supported by the DOE Office of Science. > More
   
• J. Cameron Thrash, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, has been awarded one of 10 National Academies of Sciences Early-Career Research Fellowships in the Gulf Research Program. The fellowship supports emerging scientists as they take risks on research ideas not yet tested, pursue unique collaborations and build a network of colleagues who share their interest in the well-being of coastal communities and ecosystems. > More

The LSU College of Science 's Mathematics department hosted it's 11 th  annual  Math Circle Summer Program, a four-week long  summer  program for high school students that are passionate about mathematics. Executive Director Steven O lsen along with two teachers, ga ve students a taste of college level mathematics  and helped them form and complete research projects . This year's circle consisted of 22 students .  > More

The President's Millennial Scholars Program is an initiative by LSU's Office of Diversity. The program leverages a student-centered approach to ensure the academic, cognitive, personal, career and professional development of students from underrepresented populations. Made possible through a gift by an alumni benefactor, PMSP is designed to retain students by providing academic support, professional and leadership development, and mentorship from faculty and staff.

• Caretia Washington, Shreveport, Louisiana native, majoring in microbiology
• Ajah Williams, Vidalia Louisiana native, majoring in biochemistry

With more than 16 years in the food industry, chemistry alumnus Claude Davis has helped develop some of the brands we know and love like Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and Oscar Mayer Meats. Today, he is the principal scientist and brand ambassador for Zatarain's, a product line that includes staple seasonings for many wanting to add a bit of Louisiana styled flavor to their meal. As brand ambassador, Claude is the official spokesperson for the brand with responsibilities ranging from radio and television to trade shows and corporate sponsorship events.

Claude earned his ACS-certified bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Xavier University and completed his graduate studies in the LSU Department of Chemistry in organic chemistry. Click here to learn more about Claude.
