Elementary School -
I love going to school because.....
Key Message:
- A love for learning starts early. Build the habit of good attendance -- early school success goes hand-in-hand with good attendance.
Middle and High School -
"School is your first and most important job!"
Key Message:
- You're learning more than math and reading. You're learning to show up for school on time every day, so that when you graduate and get a job you'll know how to show up for work on time every day.
Communication Tools/Strategies for Parents:
Ask parents about the importance of school attendance in the early grades, and they can tell you why showing up every day matters. They can also share their very real challenges in getting children to school. Bringing Attendance Home
, a video from Attendance Works, features parents talking to other parents about reducing absenteeism. Filmed in schools across the country, the video offers tips for parents and schools to improve student attendance.

2017 Attendance Awareness Campaign

September is the official kickoff of our annual Attendance Awareness Campaign
Due to a generous donation from Shell Refinery, the County Office will be distributing new Every School Day Counts banners to each school site in the county. We are in the process of distributing these to your district office and should be available for all schools no later than September 15th.
Superintendents & District Administrators
Additionally, the following materials and tools will be provided to districts to encourage the promotion of attendance awareness with their school boards, school staff and the community:

Students fall behind when they miss too much school, even if it is just a day or two every few weeks. School success goes hand-in-hand with good attendance.

We want to recognize those
superstar principals who are actively engaging parents, students, and staff to improve attendance and decrease chronic absence by implementing effective site-based strategies.
After completing this survey, you will be entered into the challenge in which we will recognize principals who have done an outstanding job of raising awareness at their school site regarding chronic absenteeism and working to improve student attendance.
First 50 respondents will receive a $10 gift card. $500 grand prize, $300 second place prize, and $200 third place prize. The three winners will be recognized at the countywide attendance awareness event, "Kids: Investing in OUR Future," the evening of Friday, November 3, 2017. (Complimentary event ticket provided by the Contra Costa County Attendance Awareness Campaign. See event info below.)
All entries must be submitted by October 20, 2017.

-- Report Finds Extreme Chronic Absence Levels in 11% of Nation's Schools
On Tuesday, September 12th report co-authors Hedy Chang and Robert Balfanz will discuss the new findings. Together with colleagues from Cleveland and Oregon, they will also share what works to reduce chronic absence.

Join us for the final Attendance Awareness Month 2017 webinar! This fourth webinar will feature Portraits of Change: Aligning School and Community Resources to Reduce Chronic Absence, a new brief from Attendance Works and the Everyone Graduates Center. Co-authors Hedy Chang and Robert Balfanz will highlight key findings from their national and state analysis of how many schools face high levels of chronic absence and discuss the implications for state and local action. Presenters will share inspiring examples of how their communities reduced chronic absence, even when it reached high levels in a school, district or particular student population. These insights are even more important as a growing number of states adopt chronic absence into their accountability systems for school improvement.
