Human Rights and Peace Studies Minors
The
International Studies Program is a multidisciplinary program that offers eleven majors and twelve minors, some specializing in specific regions of the world and some in topics of concern to the global community. Two newer minors are offered in
human rights and
peace studies. The
human rights minor addresses such questions as: What forms do human rights take? Which of them are widely accepted and which are widely contested? What are the bases of advocacy and contestation, and what are the implications for individuals and community with regard to the denial or granting of rights. The goal of the
peace studies minor is to produce graduates with the knowledge, skills and ethical foundation to be effective researchers, practitioners and advocates for peace and social justice. Susan Cole - Faculty Member in the Department of Molecular Genetics
Susan Cole, associate professor of molecular genetics, was recently awarded the university's highest recognition for teaching excellence, the Ohio State Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. She teaches molecular genetics, human genetics and a First Year Seminar titled "Transgenes and Stem Cells and Clones Oh My! Exploring Biology Through Fiction." Outside of her teaching and lab research, Dr. Cole is an avid reader and loves movies. Stop by to talk with her about molecular genetics, old movies, or science fiction. Education Abroad - Elizabeth Riggs Traveled to Germany
Berlin Then and Now: People, Places, Experiences
As a film studies and communication double major with a minor in dance, Elizabeth Riggs traveled to Berlin, Germany. While visiting the capital of Germany, she learned about the history of the area and how it's been shaped by specific persons and political or cultural events, as well as how it has shaped history. Among other excursions, she visited the Berlin Wall Memorial, toured Parliament and attended a variety show. Her experience broadened her perspective on how one country's decisions impact the rest of the world. Read about her experience

German Club
The
German Club welcomes new members at all levels of German as well as all students with an interest in German culture, food, and people. This year they are beginning a Community Engagement Series featuring monthly speakers. Come here Dr. Bob Woyach, lecturer in the International Studies Program, or attend one of their meetings.

Education Abroad Program Spotlight
The Other Side of the Border: Immigration Economics
During one week over Spring Break students will help to build houses in Tijuana, but more importantly, they will be hearing the stories of people in transition and gaining a better understanding of economic choices being faced by individuals, households, communities and nations. Tijuana is a city of migrants from all over Mexico and other parts of Latin America. Students will view immigration issues from various perspectives and apply economic principles. Paying Attention to the Importance of the Scientific Revolution Amid Cluelessness
Frederic Bertley, PhD, President and CEO, Center of Science and Industry (COSI), has worked in preventive medicine in Haiti, Sudan, and the Canadian Arctic. In his lecture he points out that despite
an ever-growing dependency on science and technology, we are seeing a decline in science literacy. Bertley discusses this duality and challenges us to become advocates for science emphasizing the necessity of basic scientific literacy, whatever our career paths. More info.

Fall COMPAS Conference: Religious Freedom
COMPAS is a series of year-long conversations on morality, politics, and society organized by the Center for Ethics and Human Values. This semester the conference will focus on religious freedom. What makes a belief, practice, or community "religious"? Should religious freedoms be given more protection under the law than secular ones? What should we do when the exercise of religious freedom collides with the public interest? Events are free.
