Armada Fair
Macomb County 4-H staff would like to send out a big thank you to everyone who participated in the Armada Fair this year. The Armada Agricultural Society and their Fair Board put on another spectacular fair. Sunday still project judging, youth organization shows and the youth livestock sale ran very smoothly thanks to fair board members and the dedicated volunteers who puts in a lot of hard work and dedication. The fair would not be such a great success without everyone who was involved. THANK YOU!
Gryspeerd awarded Gold Ribbon Scholarship

After earning a Gold Ribbon Award at Armada Fair, Brianne Gryspeerd of K-9 and Kompany 4-H Club applied for the Gold Ribbon Scholarship by entering ten different home art projects at
the State Fair. Yesterday she attending the ceremony where she
was awarded a $500 scholarship. Congratulations, Brianne!

The 2017-18 4-H program year begins on September 1, 2017. Club Leaders, club enrollment packets that were not picked up at the Armada Fair are available at Macomb County MSU Extension, 21885 Dunham Road, Suite 12, Clinton Township. The packets include the materials you will need to register your club for the new program year. Use the
club enrollment checklist to help you determine what needs to be turned in to the 4-H office in Clinton Township.

- New members who are planning to enter 4-H projects at the 2018 Armada Fair must be a registered 4-H member by April 1, 2018.
- Members planning to participate in the Macomb County 4-H horse point shows also need to be registered with the Macomb County 4-H Horse Program Committee by May 1, 2018.

Archery with the Macomb 4-H Youth Council
Join the Macomb 4-H Youth Council for a fun introductory archery lesson. Archers will learn how to shoot safely and with good form. No equipment necessary, there are bows, arrows and arm guards to borrow. The archers will also enjoy cider and donuts at the conclusion of the event! The fun will begin at 2:00 pm on Sunday October 1st at the Max Thompson Community Resource Center. Located at 11370 Hupp Ave, Warren, MI 48089. Adults who want to become 4-H volunteers need to complete the 4-H volunteer selection process (VSP). VSP consists of an application, background and reference checks, an interview, and completion of online training modules. Start the process today by submitting the

Members: Apply for a County Award by Nov. 1st!
Macomb County 4-H members are invited by the Macomb County 4-H Youth Council and MSU Extension 4-H staff to complete an award application for their 2016-17 4-H projects.
Competition in 4-H gives members a medium to reflect on and then demonstrate what they have
learned in their project areas. It also helps them to develop important life skills.
Fair gives members the opportunity to reflect on what they learned through an interview with a judge
(verbal communication).
County Awards give youth the opportunity to put down on an application what they have learned in
their project area (written communication).
The Top 4-H'er program increases the members level of effort by combining both a more intense
application and an interview with a panel of judges.
As members progress in their 4-H experience mastering their skills in their project areas. So should
they progress in their ways of competition.
County Awards applications must be returned to the Macomb County MSU Extension 4-H Office or be postmarked by

State 4-H Awards Workshop - Oct. 8
A 4-H State Awards Workshop will be held from 1-4 p.m. on October 8, 2017 at the Grange Hall at the Armada Fairgrounds in Armada. This workshop is for State 4-H Awards but will also help members with their County 4-H Awards applications. R.S.V.P. to

Tractor Supply Company Paper Clover Fundraiser - Oct. 4-15
Is your 4-H club looking for a fun way to host a fundraiser or recruiting event? Consider advertising 4-H at during the Tractor Supply Company (TSC) Paper Clover Event from October 4th-15th. These events are held twice a year and are a great time to fund raise and promote your 4-H club. Previous events have included a petting farm, selling baked goods and popcorn, passing out flyers to customers and more.
All of you are encouraged to reach out to your local TSC store and make arrangements with the store manager. Macomb County has two TSC locations:

Mad City Money for High School Teens
How does a young person prepare to be a financially responsible adult? Do they know how much money they need to earn to live comfortably on their own? The financial challenges of adult life can be hard for a teen to grasp. Help your teens get a taste of the adult world with
Mad City Money- a hands-on simulation where they are given a career, income, family and debt. During this 2 hour reality challenge, teens visit merchants to select housing, transportation, food, household necessities, clothing, day care, and other wants and needs while building a budget for their simulated family. Mad City Money allows participants to make financial decisions and mistakes - in a realistic, but safe, environment. Most participants are surprised to learn how much it costs to raise a child, pay for food, own a vehicle, and rent or own a home. Macomb County Hosts 4-H Teen Leadership Camp

Teen Leadership Camp was well attended and according to participants, both valuable and oh so much fun! Macomb County MSU Extension staff was fortunate to host a statewide teen leadership opportunity for 4-H teens. Teens from Wayne, Oakland, Genesee, Huron and Macomb counties attended the four-day event, August 21-24.
The camp began with a Teen Spokesperson workshop at the Gazebo Banquet Center on Mound Road in Warren. The workshop focused on public speaking and included an etiquette dinner with a complete formal table setting. The second workshop, goLEAD, focused on service learning.
Teens participated in various activities built around trust and leadership. The event included a service project where the teens made dog chew toys, pet blankets, and spent some time

in the garden at the Max Thompson Family Resource Center in Warren. Statewide educators Betty Jo Krosnicki (Sanilac County), Janelle Stewart (Lenawee County) and Jackie Martin (Washtenaw County) shared their valuable experience and skills and led the teens through the workshops. Macomb County 4-H Program Coordinator Elizabeth Duran witnessed many amazing moments as the teens worked through the activities and forged new friendships. The event cost of only $15 was sponsored by a grant from Monsanto.

Fundraiser for St. Clair County 4-H family - September 23
A 4-H family in St. Clair County needs your support. The father,
Nathan Brown, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is very ill. His wife Beth runs the household, manages the farm, the kids' activities, and Nathan's doctor appointments and chemo regimen. Beth also helps with Bible school and funeral dinners at the Crossroads Community Church. The Brown family is involved in the community as members of the St. Clair County 4-H group, Rimrock Acres. Nathan helped mentor kids in the robotics program, while Beth is involved with the Palms Elementary PTO and helps coach AYSO Soccer.
Please come to the fundraiser organized by Beth's employer and show your support for the Brown family by coming to the St. Clair Lions Club at 4900 St. Clair Hwy. on Saturday, September 23, 2017, anytime between noon and 8 p.m. If you are unable to come but would like to show your support please give a monetary donation or a new item to be raffled off. 2017 National 4-H Congress
"Be True, Be You" and participate in
the 2017 National 4-H Congress November 24 to 28 in Atlanta, Georgia! Michigan 4-H youth ages 14-19 are invited to apply for this leadership, citizenship and community service event. In this capstone 4-H youth leadership event, 4-H youth from across the U.S. will come together to experience an exciting program, full of educational, service and leadership opportunities as well as local cultural tours and experiences. The event includes outstanding community leaders, speakers and educators. The exact cost will be determined based on the number of delegates and airfare, but will be around $1,500. Regional Shotgun Volunteer Training - September 16-17
Alcona County (Northeastern LP) is hosting a
regional shotgun volunteer training on Saturday and Sunday, Sept 16 and 17. This training is for 4-H volunteers that would like become certified as a shotgun instructor. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is only open to the first 25 participants. Registration must be sent back to me by Monday, September 11. The total cost of training will be $75, which includes all training materials, range time as well as snacks and lunch both days.
For volunteers who are coming in from out of town, a block of rooms is being held at the training facility's hotel for $50 each (single occupancy). Information on this lodging option is included with the
registration information.

Michigan 4-H Small Animal Workshop - September 23-24

What is Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council (SYLC)?
Established in 2015, the Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council is a statewide leadership opportunity for 4-H youth. SYLC members serve as representatives of the Michigan 4-H program, promoting 4-H through state and local activities, and can provide youth voice and perspective on the development of 4-H programs and curricula. SYLC members are also provided an opportunity to represent Michigan in attendance at the National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C.
Who is eligible?
Any 4-H participant, age 15-19 by January 1, 2018, can apply for a council position. They must be currently enrolled in a 4-H program, in good standing in their local 4-H club or unit, and have completed at least the previous year of 4-H work. Youth are selected for the council by application and interview with a state committee of MSU Extension staff. SYLC member terms are two years.
When/where do they meet?
The Council meets monthly through Zoom online video conferencing and holds at least two in-person meetings in conjunction with other state 4-H events: 4-H Teen Leadership and Global Citizenship Spectacular (Kettunen Center, January) and 4-H Exploration Days (MSU campus, June).
Why would youth be interested in SYLC?
SYLC members receive training on public speaking, advocacy, communication and leadership skills. SYLC is Michigan's highest youth leadership opportunity and is a goal that older youth can aspire toward. SYLC members get to broaden their network and expand their knowledge of 4-H programs beyond their counties.
How do youth apply?
Interested youth should complete an electronic survey, which will serve as their application. The link to the application will be posted online at http://msue.anr.msu.edu/program/info/sylc once it is active. Applicants must also select two adults, one being their 4-H Program Coordinator, to complete a reference. The deadline to apply for 2018 is October 27, 2017. Selected applicants will be contacted by SYLC advisors to arrange time for an interview following the closing date.
How does SYLC benefit Michigan 4-H?
Michigan 4-H believes that youth should be participants, rather than recipients in the learning process. Staff teach volunteers about strengthening youth voice and youth-adult partnerships at the club and county level. SYLC provides an outlet for youth voice at the state level. As staff plan new programs, design promotional tools or create curriculum geared at high-school age groups, contact the SYLC advisors and ask to get on an upcoming SYLC agenda.

MAFE Scholarship Opportunity for High School Seniors and College Students
Each year the Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibitions offers a scholarship opportunity for youth. The criteria for youth eligibility are:
- Each year six (6) scholarships of $1,000 may be awarded, one being the Neil Kentner memorial scholarship.
- Scholarship is open to applicants that are high school seniors orcurrently enrolled in an institution of advance learning such as a college, university or trade school. (If applicant is a high school senior they must have submitted an application to an advanced leaning institution.)
- Application must be RECEIVED by October 1.
- Scholarships winners will be announced at the Annual MAFE Convention.
- Recipients may apply each year he or she is enrolled in the Institution, but shall not be eligible to receive a scholarship more than 6 years. Preference for awarding of scholarship each year will be to first-time applicants.
- The scholarship can be used for any and all expenses related to the applicants' continued education.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award
Do you know young 4-H members who deserve special recognition for their volunteer service?
Encourage them to apply for a 2018
Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Students in grades 5-12 who have volunteered in the past year are eligible for honors at the local, state and national level. Top honorees earn monetary awards and all-expense-paid trips with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C. for special recognition events.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards - the largest youth recognition program in the U.S. based exclusively on volunteer service - is sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. A number of 4-H members have earned state-level recognition from the program in recent years.
Here's how your chapter can participate:
- Now through November 7, 2017, youth volunteers can apply at http://spirit.prudential.com and www.nassp.org/spirit .
- Members must complete their applications and submit certification materials to your executive officer by November 7.
- Then, your chapter can select one Local Honoree for every 1,000 members (or portion thereof) in grades 5-8, and one for every 1,000 members (or portion thereof) in grades 9-12.
- Once Local Honorees have been selected, executive officers have until November 17, 2017 to certify their applications online for state-level judging.
All state-level honorees will receive special recognition, and top youth volunteers are eligible for monetary awards and all-expense-paid trips to Washington, D.C. for several days of special recognition events.
