Professor Nichols to speak at upcoming cybersecurity event at Wichita State University
Associate professor Randall Nichols is ready to give his audience a wake up call when it comes to impending drone wars.
A professor of UAS cybersecurity at Kansas State Polytechnic, Nichols has been asked to speak at the upcoming Cybersecurity Forum at Wichita State University and will be giving a presentation titled, "Drone Wars: Threats, Vulnerabilities and Hostile Use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Small UAS."
During the event, which takes place Oct. 4 at the Hughes Metroplex, Nichols will touch on the UAS and small UAS landscape, including automation, collaboration, conventional vulnerabilities and countermeasures. He will also speak on commercial UAV sophistication, sense and avoid and SCADA systems. Woven into his presentation will be solutions to any risks or problems posed to unmanned aircraft when it comes to cybersecurity.

Aviation professor volunteers for Hurricane Harvey relief effort
Hurricane Harvey's damage to southeast Texas and parts of Louisiana is estimated to be the costliest natural disaster in the nation's history.
With so much assistance that has been needed for rescue, recovery and rebuilding, one of Kansas State Polytechnic's aviation professors has decided to help by doing what he does best: flying!
John Dahl, (third from right in the photo) a teaching assistant professor, took off to Houston last week to fly medevac flights in support of the relief efforts.
The aviation program has also been made aware of several alumni of the professional pilot program that are using their piloting skills to help. This kind of generosity and dedication to lending a hand to those in need make us K-State proud!

K-State Polytechnic UAS team participates in national conference
As the unmanned aircraft systems industry develops and expands, so do the learning and networking opportunities - and Kansas State Polytechnic is always somewhere in the mix.
This past week, the campus was at the forefront of the national conference, UAS Tech Forum, when it sponsored the one-day event as well as displayed a booth there and had Kurt Carraway, UAS executive director of the Applied Aviation Research Center, preside over a precision agriculture panel. Students from the UAS degree option also attended presentations and connected with members of the industry.
The UAS Tech Forum was held Aug. 31 in Wichita and was created by the Oklahoma/Kansas UAS Cluster Initiative.

Loan Repayment Option for Graduating Students
The state of Kansas is offering up to $15,000 in student loan repayment and up to a 5 year state tax waiver for graduates who establish residency in one of the 77 Kansas counties designated as a rural opportunity zone. For more information, visit the link below:
Employee Tuition Assistance and Spouse/ Dependent Grant
1. Employee Tuition Assistance
Award amount is for tuition only in a K-State course for up to 3 credit hours per term.
The maximum award amount will not exceed the value of 3 hours at the in-state Manhattan/Salina tuition rate (ie. campus fees, other institutional fees, etc. are the responsibility of the employee).

Spouse/Dependent Grants (Only REGULAR employees are eligible. If you are unsure if you are REGULAR or TERM, check your contract or with the HR office.)
For Dependents or Spouses that are enrolled full time in a degree terminating undergraduate program, the award will be the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 7 undergraduate course credits, where full-time for an undergraduate is defined as at least 12 enrolled credit hours per regular fall/spring term.
For Spouses that are enrolled part-time in a degree terminating undergraduate program the maximum award will be the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 3 undergraduate course credits, where part-time for an undergraduate is defined as less than 12 enrolled credit hours per regular fall/spring term. (Enrollment of less than 3 credit hours, will result in the proration of the award i.e. 2 credit hours enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 2 credit hours - or - 1 credit hour enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 1 credit hour. )
Dependents that are enrolled less than full-time in an undergraduate program are not eligible for the K-State Dependent/Spouse Grant.
For Dependents or Spouses that are enrolled in a degree terminating graduate or veterinary medicine program the maximum award will be the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 3 course credit hours as indicated by the student's degree program, graduate or veterinary medicine. (Enrollment of less than 3 credit hours, will result in the proration of the award i.e. 2 credit hours enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 2 credit hours - or - 1 credit hour enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 1 credit hour.)
