September is Hunger Action Month
What will you do to mark Hunger Action Month?

Here are some ideas:

SNAP Challenge - Can you feed yourself and your family on the average SNAP benefit of $4.60 per day? Try it for a day or even a week - or longer. Give it a try the week of September 10, or really anytime that works for you. Guidelines can be found here.  Share your story in a blog on Facebook or here.

Wear Orange - On Thursday, September 14 -  Hunger Awareness Day - join thousands of people around the country who are raising awareness and inspiring action by wearing orange.

Share your story -  Did you or your family ever receive food stamps?  Share your story here and help us end the sitgma!

Walk the Talk! ...  Join us at the Fight Hunger 5K on Sunday, September 17.

Remington Recreation Trail, Canton
Registration begins at 12:30
Walkers leave at 1:00, Runners leave at 1:30

Registration is a $20 donation - t- shirts will be given to those who raise $50 or more.

Other prizes will go to:
  • Individual who raises the most money to fight hunger
  • Team that raises the most money to fight hunger
  • Fastest time in the following age categories:  12 and under, 13 to 25, 26 to 40, over 40
Run or walk or skip the 5K route. Bring the kids, bring the whole family!  Form a team or go solo!  eams of participants from schools, churches, businesses, or other organizations are encouraged.

Farmers Markets Still Going Strong in September

September is a busy time at our local farmers markets, with lots of produce available. You are likely to find: a
pples, b eans, beets, berries, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, collard greens, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, herbs, kale, leeks,lettuce, melons,  onions, peas, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, radishes, spinach, squash, swiss chard, tomatoes, and turnips are all likely.  In addition, the markets frequently have other food, such as maple syrup, honey, and baked goods, and also local wine and craft vendors.
  • Canton - village park, Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:00 to 2:00
  • Gouverneur - village park every Thursday from 9:00 to 2:00 
  • Hammond - Hammond Museum, Wednesdays from 3:00 to 6:00 until September 20
  • Massena - Danforth Place, Sundays 10:00 to 2:00 and Thursdays  11:00 to 6:00
  • Potsdam - Ives Park every Saturday from 9:00 to 2:00
Remember that debit and credit cards and SNAP EBT cards are welcome at all the farmers markets in St. Lawrence County.

Growing Community Nominations Sought
Each year GardenShare recognizes an individual or organization whose efforts strengthen food security in northern New York State with the Growing Community Award. Past recipients have included farmers, food service staff, a food bank, community groups, and others.  Individuals, families, or organizations who are making progress in solving the problem of hunger through policy and advocacy work or by building a stronger food system to better serve all North Country residents may be nominated for this recognition.  Go here  to submit a nomination. Nominations are due October 2.

VISTA Welcome!
Welcome to Maggie Smith who joined us late last month as an AmeriCorps VISTA!  Maggie will be working on volunteer recruitment and farmers market promotion.
