Hurricane Irma Updates in the Rector's Rambling below.

If you were unable to attend our Master Planning Presentation in July and would like to share your ideas for the future of Christ Church, please plan to attend one of the Town Hall meetings scheduled this weekend, Saturday, September 9th and Sunday, September 10th, at St. Ignatius and Christ Church. Click here for more details.

We encourage everyone to sign up for the Revival coming to Honey Creek on September 17th! To do so, you must register for the Revival on the diocesan website found here. To reserve a seat on the bus through Christ Church, go to the Pushpay page here and choose Revival "Bus" Honey Creek .

Rector's Ramblings

It would be an answer to millions of prayers if Irma would suddenly dissipate and go away.  But such things don't happen.  One of the largest storms ever recorded in the Atlantic is bearing down on the Leeward Islands and has F lorida i her sigh ts.  We don't know exactly where she'll go over the next few days, but the models are starting to converge around a devastating blow to Florida, one way or another.  A number of the models also put southeast Georgia in her crosshairs, or at least close enough that we could see worse results than last year's Matthew.

Now is not the time to panic - hurricanes move blessedly  slowly.  We'll know more in the coming days about what to expect.  But, Irma does present us with an opportunity to reflect, spiritually and practically, as we watch the weather reports.  On the spiritual side, Matthew taught us a good lesson on what is important.  We learned that a sense of peace about our earthly possessions can set in after we recognize that people and pets who are safe are more important than just about anything else.  We also had a dress rehearsal for a worse storm in that Matthew could have been much worse.  Now we know what we learned just last fall and can put into play this year, lessons like what else needs to get in the car, and how soon to start getting ready and leaving.

And that leads us to the practical side of things.  NOW is the time to get that plan together if we don't have one.  Make sure you knowwhere you want to go if we have to evacuate.  Make sure you have water and food on hand in case it's not bad enough to evacuate, but bad enough that we lose power for days or weeks.   There are a lot of resources online to help us prepare for hurricanes, and the time to prepare, should we be looking at even a glancing blow, is now.  The National Hurricane Center has a great website with links to FEMA and other organizations to help with planning.  In addition, here is information you may need to know about life at Christ Church as another hurricane threatens our region:

  1. Weekend Services:  We will hold services as long as weather is not dangerous and there is not any kind of evacuation.  If we are under Tropical Storm conditions by Sunday (possible but not yet predicted) we will not hold services out of an abundance of caution.  We will stream something online for people to participate in wherever you may be.  Should there be a voluntary evacuation at any time, all activities and worship services will be cancelled and the office will close.  We will secure parish buildings and important items and the staff will lead by example by evacuating.  We will also do as we did last year and help verify that parishioners are safe.
  2. Share your plan:  It would be very helpful if you would email or call us to tell us ahead of time where you will go and how we can get in touch with you if there is indeed an evacuation.  You can email me ([email protected]) or Mother Becky ([email protected]), or you may call the office.  Make sure we have your cell phone numbers and the location of your destination.  As we did with Matthew we will attempt to reach as many people as possible to check in during and after a storm.
  3. Ask for help and help others:  Please, please let us know sooner rather than later if you need help preparing or evacuating.  We have learned that St. Paul's Jesup will open as a shelter again, if needed, and we will explore other options within the state of GA as well.  Also, check in with your fellow parishioners and neighbors, especially senior citizens or those with health problems and see if you can help them or make us aware of needs.  The sooner we know about something, the more likely it is we can help.
  4. Lend a hand preparing Christ Church:  If it looks as though we will see a dangerous swipe or direct hit from Irma we will board up the stained glass windows on the church for some added protection.  It's something we wished we had done before leaving for Matthew, and we were lucky that nothing struck the church. We have the supplies, but Harry and I could use some hands to accomplish this, should it be needed, and will do it as soon as it seems we are in a predicted danger zone.  Those who have some time to help us do that before evacuating are welcome to pitch in, just let me know now so we can reach out to share details if the need arises.

As always, keep the faith.  We are always less afraid when we remember God's promise to be with us through all things.  We can also be kind to one another.  We proved last year what can happen when neighbors care for and watch out for one another.  This time around will be no different.  We don't panic, but we do prepare.  We will keep you posted on developments that affect Christ Church, and we are here to help where we can.  In the meantime, keep those in Irma's path in your prayers.  There are a lot of people who will be affected by this storm, and some will undoubtedly lose their lives and their homes.  God is with us, and God is good, no matter where Irma goes.

Worship

Fall Worship Schedule

Join us this fall for one of the many worship opportunities we're offering at Christ Church! On Saturdays, at 5:30 pm, we offer the Rite II Eucharist service at St. Ignatius Chapel on Demere Road. On Sundays, we start the morning in the historic church with the 8:00 am, 1928 Book of Common Prayer service, followed by two 9:15 am Eucharist services (usually Rite II) in the church and in the Parish Hall. At 9:15 am, we also offer Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for our younger children. At 11:15 am, Rite I Eucharistic worship takes place in the church. On Wednesdays, the Healing Service is held at 12:00 pm in Christ Church.

On September 10th, our monthly 6:00 pm Sunday evening EYC Rooted and Relevant services resume, and on October 11th, X Church begins again, at 6:30 pm, every Wednesday. There are also special worship services planned throughout the fall season, like the Blessing of the Animals, that you don't want to miss! To see the schedule for fall worship and read about all the programs and activities happening at Christ Church, click here.

Revival: Fearless Faith, Boundless Love

The Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry, is traveling throughout the country this year offering a series of revivals. On Sunday, September 17th, the  Diocese of Georgia will offer a revival based on Fearless Faith and Boundless Love. Join us for a day of renewal and to celebrate the life and legacy of a Saint in Georgia, Deaconess Anna Alexander. The revival worship will use the propers for Deaconess Anna Alexander of Georgia (1865-1947) and displays, handouts, and a video will tell the story of this saint of Georgia.

The day begins with a service at Good Shepherd, Pennick where Deaconess Anna Alexander served.  At 2:00 pm, parishioners from all over the diocese of Georgia will gather under a large tent on the grounds of Honey Creek Retreat Center to hear the Most Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, as he shares his message of love and renewal. Please save September 17, as it will be a day to celebrate our faith together and to share it with others. For more information and to register for the revival through the diocese online, click here

Bus Transportation to Honey Creek on Sept.17

Because parking at Honey Creek is extremely limited, the diocese is asking attendees use group transportation. We have arranged for two buses to drive the round trip from Christ Church to Honey Creek and back on the day of the revival. The buses will be leaving from Christ Church at 11:30 am and departing from Honeycreek for the return trip at 4:00 pm. The cost per person is $28. To reserve and purchase a seat on the bus, click here to go to the Christ Church Pushpay payment page. (To ride the bus, you must reserve and pay for your seat in advance.)

Special note: After you've clicked the button to reserve and pay for your seat, please make sure to choose Revival "Bus" Honeycreek from the options listed.

You may also pay for a bus seat by check, made out to Christ Church, Frederica, for $28. Please write "Bus" in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to the church office or put in the offering plate.

Happening is Happening Again!
Registration is open for Happening, a Christian experience presented by teenagers for teenagers. Designed for youth in grades 10 - 12, Happening is a cornerstone of diocesan youth programs and an experience not to miss. Ben Sandbach is the teen serving as Rector for Happening #99, which meets Friday, September 22-24 at Honey Creek.

Most young people have serious questions about Jesus and the Church. Happening is designed to address these questions. During a  Happening weekend, participants experience the love of Christ as shown through prayer, worship, and the ministry of peers, clergy, and lay adults. The Happeners are encouraged to make their renewed faith a part of their everyday lives. Happening shows how Christianity can keep pace with the many changes in our lives and our world.

Helping Those Affected by Hurricane Harvey

"What can I do to help?"

When we see images of people suffering, we want to do something. That's understandable. As Christians, we are called to seek and serve Christ in all people and never more so than in times of crisis. T he tricky part is responding in a way that is timely and appropriate .

Now is the time to offer financial support.  Contributing to Episcopal Relief & Development will ensure that we have enough resources to support the work of our church partners as they serve the most vulnerable in their communities. They are best positioned to assess needs and timing for response efforts. If you would like to support the work of the Episcopal Relief teams in Houston and the surrounding areas, click here to make a donation. Or you may write a check, payable to Christ Church, Frederica and write Episcopal Relief - Hurricane Harvey in the memo line.

St. Athansius Food Bank
Please remember to bring your non-perishable food donations for the St. Athanasius Feed My Sheep Food Ministry, this weekend. You may leave your food items at St. Ignatius Chapel on Saturday or in the shopping cart located in the Christ Church Parish House on Sunday.

The Backpack Buddies will be packing tomorrow, Thursday, September 7th, at 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall. Please join them!

You can feed a child for $10.00 a month, $50.00 for a half year or $100 for the full 10 month/38 week school year. Please prayerfully consider donating to help feed these children in need by sponsoring a child for a month, half the year or for a full year. You may make your check to Christ Church, Frederica with Backpack Buddies in the memo line and send it to the church, drop it in the offering or at the church office.  Contact Susan Shipman at [email protected] or 912-222-9206.
