FEATURED EVENT: 8.5 Summer Bridge Program
This summer, Hillsboro School District launched a new program to help 8th graders make a successful transition to high school. Called the 8.5 Summer Bridge Program, the effort focused on more than 200 incoming freshmen who were selected by their teachers and counselors as ones who could most benefit from additional support. The program was held at all four of our comprehensive high schools during the first two weeks of August and addressed academic success and college readiness. Many thanks to our community sponsors Hillsboro Dutch Bros. and the United Methodist Church for their donations and for encouraging the students.

HAPPENING IN HILLSBORO

Did you know that one of the line items in our capital construction bond ask is $10 million to provide every school in the District with flexible classroom furniture that will help enhance the learning environment for students? Check out this video on the pilot project that ran in select classrooms last year to see the positive impact it had.

HSD Connected Camp
This August, the District, in partnership with Hillsboro Parks and Recreation and the Hillsboro Police Department, held the first annual HSD Connected Camp in which 20 middle school boys spent a week participating in positive, engaging and informative activities, such as STEAM, outdoor and water safety, police and fire operations, community service, and more.

Back-to-School Safety Reminders
HSD and the Hillsboro Police Department want to remind all drivers about safety as the new school year begins. More than 20,000 students will be heading to school this week, and motorists need to slow down and exercise good judgment as they travel near schools.

Free ESOL PD Course Available
Current teachers who do not yet hold an ESOL endorsement are encouraged to sign up for this online professional development course through Pacific University. Thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Education, the course is being offered free of charge. The course, ESOL Strategies in Content Classroom, runs Oct. 2 through Dec. 15 and is worth 3 semester credits or 90 PDUs. The course is capped at 15 students and is first-come, first-served.
