PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

On August 10, 2017, President Trump addressed the opioid crisis. There were conflicting reports about whether he would actually make an emergency declaration, which is an official presidential act. Should he make an emergency declaration about the opioid crisis, certain things could become possible outcomes. This was reported by National Public Radio on their Morning Edition show, August 11, 2017.  The following are possible outcomes:  
 
FEMA money could become available to states. This would be under the authority of the Stafford Act to declare an emergency. This fund currently has about 1.5 billion dollars contained within it.  CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

KMA Update

As you read this KMA Update, the KMA will have already concluded another successful annual meeting in Louisville.  There were six physicians from across Kentucky who participated in the Community Connector Leadership Program Class of 2017 and were recognized at the annual meeting.  The program started in 2013 and is designed to make Kentucky physician leaders even better. LMS has had multiple physician participants and examples of this outstanding program.

Nominations are due for the 2017 Jack Trevey Award for Community Service & the Carolyn Kurz Lay Person Award for Distinguished Service.

 

*The Jack Trevey Award for Community Service recognizes an LMS member who performs outstanding service to the community by direct involvement in the community beyond his/her role as a physician.  Such individuals might include physician volunteers in community programs, physicians serving on school boards, or involved in local or state government.

 

*The Carolyn Kurz Lay Person Award for Distinguished Service recognizes individuals other than physicians  who reside or work in Fayette County who perform distinguished service in the area of medical science, medical education, medical care, or other areas which directly impacts on the health & well-being of Fayette Co residents.

Economics of Electronic Health Record Signatures

More than eighty percent of physicians in the US now use electronic health records according to HealthIT.gov. An electronic signature is one component of EHR. The focus of electronic signatures was often on systems and software products that must include protections against modification and other administrative safeguards, and not the  timeliness  of signing and closing an electronic signature.  FOR MORE INFO CLICK HERE
