In the Wake of Charlottesville
What can we do to counter the hate, violence, racism and anti-Semitism?
The answer I am hearing again and again from experts weighing in is this - VOTE! They emphasize increased efforts at getting registration and voter ID information to eligible voters, and then getting the voters registered and to the polls at time of election - a significant problem, especially in Wisconsin, for the last major election in 2016.
The LWV of La Crosse is in the process of developing a partnership with regional libraries, starting with the La Crosse Public Library, to provide that information and to help potential voters register, online or by mail.
This partnership will take wo(man)-power to get the work done. So we need to hear from you
If you would like to be part of the effort, send an email to Peter Nelson ( [email protected]), Director of Voter Services, to let him know:
I can Help.

David Brooks of the New York Times says this is "a thoughtful defense of traditional conservatism and a thorough assault on the way Donald Trump is betraying it." Jeff Flake is the junior United States senator from Arizona.
Hope to see you there.

Learn, Advocate, Participate
For over 95 years, the LWV has acted to protect democracy, expand voting rights, engage voter participation, and defend the environment. In this politically fraught time, with civic activism flourishing, our local League receives invitations to join with others who share these same values. Mindful of our commitment to non-partisan action and advocacy, we will continue to inform you about opportunities to engage in other organizations' efforts to promote these essential civic principles.

La Crosse County Board Passes Fair Maps Resolution
In August, La Crosse and Monroe
joined with 22 other counties that have passed a resolution calling for fair state electoral maps. The resolution also calls on the state legislature to create an impartial, nonpartisan process--based on what is being called the Iowa Model--for drawing Wisconsin's voting maps.
Our League's October program will present information on current efforts, both individual and collective, to end gerrymandering and bring nonpartisan redistricting to Wisconsin.
|
Nevertheless, We Persist
A renewed grassroots effort
is reviving
the effort to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.
Janette Dean, a local resident who has participated in the recently successful campaign in Nevada, is encouraging interested individuals to contact members of Congress to solicit support for ERA ratification bills currently under consideration.
|
Since 1993, The Progressive Media Project has worked to amplify under-
represented voices in mainstream media, to end discrimination, advance
social justice, and democratize perspectives on current events.
By participating in our workshop, you will:
★ Learn how to effectively communicate your ideas as an op-ed writer;
★ Receive editorial and op-ed placement support from The Progressive maga-
zine's editorial team;
★ Understand how to use social media to get your published op-ed in
front of a larger audience.
Breakfast, lunch, trans-
portation and
accommo-dation expenses are covered as well.
