San Francisco Giants Update

St. Louis Cardinals pinch runner Harrison Bader (48) was inserted into the game at the top of the 10th inning to replace Dexter Flower, who had just tripled. Next up was Stephen Piscotty, who hit a ground ball to Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval. Bader broke for the plate... |

San Francisco Giants Update:
The start of September means roster expansion in the MLB, and the Giants had plenty of roster moves themselves this last week. Utility player Orlando Calixte, relievers Steven Okert and Derek Law, and catcher Tim Federowicz all joined the Big League club on the first
of the month, and starter Johnny Cueto was activated off the disabled list. Cueto made his return on Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals, giving up two runs in 5.1 innings while receiving a No Decision for his efforts. With Cueto back in the rotation, manager Bruce Bochy told the press that the team will use a six-man rotation, at least temporarily. On the other end of the spectrum, Bochy said he was unsure if first baseman Brandon Belt will return to the field this season, and is considering shutting down reliever Mark Melancon for the rest of the year, as he deals with a forearm injury. Last week was disappointing for the Giants on the field, going 2-5 in series against the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals. This week the team will hit the road, facing the Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox.

Oakland Athletics Update:
It was a rough week for the Athletics, to say the least, as they were swept in back-to-back series by the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners. Oakland had trouble on both sides of the ball, being held to two or fewer runs in four of the games, while also giving up seven or more runs in four of the games. The Athletics did begin calling up reinforcements, however, with top prospect Franklin Barreto, reliever Sam Moll, outfielder Jake Smolinski, and catcher Josh Phegley rejoining the club. The callups will continue on Tuesday after the end of the Triple-A season, with prospect Renato Nunez among the next wave to join the team. Despite all these additions, the A's may have lost a pitcher, as Paul Blackburn is not expected to pitch again this season, while recovering from a bruise in his pitching hand. This week the Athletics come home for more divisional play as the Los Angeles Angels and Houston Astros come to town.

San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver and return man Victor Bolden, Jr. (83) may have been on the bubble for a roster spot entering the game against the Los Angeles Chargers but a 92-yard punt return for a touchdown eliminated any doubt. How Technology Is Changing the Business of Sports
BUS 172 -- Quarter: Fall; On-campus course; Sept. 26-Oct. 31, Drop Deadline: Oct. 9; Tuition: $450; Status: Open; Day(s): Tuesdays; Duration: 6 weeks; Time: 7 p.m. -- 8:50 p.m.; Unit: 1; Instructor: Andy Dolich
Like all businesses, the sports world is adapting to satisfy the new demands of customers (while expecting increases in profitability, of course). Most of the evolution in the sports world is being spearheaded by technological advances. These changes are powerfully modifying the interaction between the sports provider and the sports consumer. The range of change is multidimensional, creating new entrepreneurial opportunities and unique business models.
This course will bring into the classroom industry experts who will discuss how newer technologies are embedded in, and driving, these developments, including (1) "wiring" of arenas and stadiums of the future to enhance the fan experience; (2) analytics and metrics impacting not only athlete selection and performance, but also the knowledge level of fans; (3) management challenges of building a global fan base that permits expansions across the world; (4) virtual-reality spectatorship for those not at the actual event; (5) new interactive opportunities for fan engagement; and (6) emergence of esports (new franchises and leagues). Each session will include an extensive question-and-answer session to cover entrepreneurial ideas related to the week's topics.
Scheduled participating speakers include:
* Jamie Zaninovich, Deputy Commissioner/Chief Operating Officer, Pac 12 Conference
* Sally Ann Reiss,Founder and CEO, PlayyOn
* David Koppett, Vice President of Content Strategy, NBC Sports Bay Area
* Bill Schlough, Senior Vice President & CIO, San Francisco Giants
* Tracy Hughes, Founder and CEO, Silicon Valley Sports Ventures
Andy Dolich is the instructor. He has held executive positions in the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL.

Daily Civility in Sports and Life
By Andy Dolich
|
Sports is an industry that has never been compared to super symmetric quantum mechanics. It hasn't been awarded Nobel Peace prizes. That being said, I believe it is one of the five global languages, joining music, visual arts, religion, science and dance. For the most part sports is civilized but we are starting to see some fraying around the edges, both on the field and in the stands.
Our media-driven society deals with instant affirmation and even speedier deconstruction. Today's world of multimedia attention spans are measured in nano-seconds. We seem to care more about the skinny on the Kardashians than the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. Lady Gaga wearing a meat dress gets more ink than our crumbling education system. Players, coaches, owners and fans don't think the rules pertain to them. It's time to reflect on why we love sports and get a grip on treating the game and each other with respect.
Sports has been very good to us. It has given America rest and recreation, myths and memories, heroes and history. It has mirrored our society and at times propelled us, offering models for democracy, community, commerce and common humanity. More importantly, sports can be an engine of CHD -- Common Human Decency.
In all sectors of our daily lives there are signs we are losing that sense of decency. If you want to see signs of the coming apocalypse, just think about your last experiences traveling by air anywhere, driving to work, enjoying a nice quiet night out at the movies, or having some bozo in the express line in front of you, with 27 items instead of 10, at the new Amazon-Whole Foods market. Try having a simple, non-confrontational time at a ballgame with your family.
Sports is being infused into our culture on a level never seen before in history.
We watch it in person on TV.
We listen to hours of sports talk radio.
We wear it.
We paint our faces with it, even tattoo it on various body parts.
We play it.
We eat and drink at it. "Please pass the Garlic fries."
We travel to it.
We push our kids into it.
We think we can coach and referee it.
We photograph it.
We videotape it.
We play video games of it.
We read about it.
We Tweet, Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram, Text and Twackle it.
We fantasy league it.
We egame it.
We bet on it.
We talk like nitwits on our phones, trying to get shown on TV.
We bring nonsensical signs to it.
We TIVO and DVR it.
WE VR and AR it.
We soccer mom to it.
We debate it ad nauseum.
We act like we are players, and not spectators, at games.
The savage beating of San Francisco Giants fan Brian Stow, a father of two from Santa Cruz, brought national outrage and focus to fan behavior at sporting events. This horrific example of fan behavior gone bad is not the norm. Stow's attackers weren't sports fans but common street thugs. Ballparks, arenas and playing fields throughout America represent the last town squares left in our country. Leagues, teams and fans have to work together to make sure that the ballpark experience from driveway to driveway remains safe havens for all that love sports.
Andy Dolich, President, Dolich Consulting -- Andy Dolich has held executive positions in the NFL (San Francisco 49ers), NBA (Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers), MLB (Oakland A's),NHL (Washington Capitals) Pro Soccer and Lacrosse. He is the Entrepreneur in Residence at Menlo College and teaches sports business at
Stanford's School of Continuing Studies.
