ADVOCACY ALERT
MCCH Heads to Capitol Hill

MCCH staff recently headed to Capitol Hill to visit with our representatives and senators in Congress to advocate for the resources needed to end homelessness. Our efforts were done in partnership with the National Alliance to End Homelessness and 2,000 representatives from other homeless service providers across the country.

We are proud to share the impact of our advocacy. Within days of our visits, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee released details on their FY2018 HUD funding levels.

  • $73 million increase to $2.456 billion for McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants, which is how MCCH and other local providers receive federal funding to support our programs. This increase is especially significant given that the Administration requested a $133 million decrease.
  • $1.07 billion increase to $21.365 billion for Tenant-Based (Section 8) Housing Choice Vouchers. Again, this is significant given the Administration’s proposed cuts to the four program accounts that fund these vouchers.
  • $3.6 million for the operation of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness and a commitment to the ongoing support of this agency. By contrast, the Administration’s proposed budget eliminated these funds as well as the existence of this critical organization in addressing homelessness nationwide.

While these numbers are not final, they do represent the starting point in the Senate. For more details, read the press releases from both the Senate Majority and Minority committee members. We will share appropriate updates when available.

Thanks to this awesome group of volunteers from Church of the Redeemer for their work on a paint project at our Darnestown Safe Haven

This shared residence provides emergency shelter to seven homeless veterans who receive 24/7 support to address the issues that led to their homelessness and prepare for their transition into permanent housing through HUD-VASH, a joint program from the U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs to end homelessness for veterans.

These improvements will brighten up the living space for our veteran clients!

Thank you for your commitment to ensuring that all Montgomery County residents have a safe, stable and affordable place to call home!

Sincerely,

Susie Sinclair-Smith, Executive Director
