Storytelling with words and images: Our writing workshop at Aperture Gallery in NYC.
Last month, Aperture Foundation, the Ackerman Institute for the Family, and The Voices and Faces Project came together to present an intersectional approach to art-making and storytelling as vehicles to address gender-based violence. As part of a unique programming series that debuted at Aperture Gallery in Chelsea, photographer Renee Rowan, a graduate of our "Stories We Tell" writing workshop, launched her groundbreaking exhibition, Bodies of Wood while The Voices and Faces Project brought its two-day testimonial writing workshop to a community of gifted new writers.

In 2016, The Voices and Faces Project partnered with Coalition Against Trafficking in Women, Sanctuary for Families, and National Organization for Women/Women's Justice NOW to launch World Without Exploitation, a national coalition to end human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Today, our Voices and Faces Project storytelling team is leading the coalition's efforts to create the nation's first-ever archive of human trafficking and sexual exploitation survivor testimony. Through an online survivor survey (launching this fall), and our ongoing conversations with an extraordinary community of survivors who are sharing their stories in order to create change, our goal is to compile a body of testimony that allows us to better understand this pressing human rights and gender justice issue. |

Words = Change — a collaboration between Chicago's Stories on Stage and The Voices and Faces Project — was our first-ever public performance of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry that speaks to the impact that gun violence, income inequality, and gender-based violence have on Chicago-area girls. Read aloud by young professional actors, these pieces were crafted by youth graduates of The Voices and Faces Project's "Stories We Tell" writing workshops at Chicago's Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, Young Women's Leadership Charter School, University of Chicago, and Northwestern University. Special thanks to Laurene Powell Jobs, Secretary Arne Duncan, and Emerson Collective for their support of this first of its kind — and sold out! — performance. |

Translating what we know about human trafficking and sexual exploitation into a series of messages that resonate for the general public is what "Marketing a Movement," our newest Voices and Faces project advocacy training, is all about. This half-day presentation and moderated discussion begins with a case study focused on "The Ugly Truth" anti-trafficking campaign, which was recognized by the European Union as one of the most groundbreaking gender-justice campaigns running worldwide. Created with the support of NoVo Foundation, and in partnership with our trusted allies at Brew Advisors.
