So Great a Cloud of Witnesses
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us...
Hebrews 12:1-2
It has been a delight this summer to reflect on the familiar characters mentioned in the Letter to the Hebrews and its frequent references to the Old Testament. We don't often look to the Old Testament for inspiration. Far too often the stories arouse a bit of mirth instead. A Sunday School teacher was describing how Lot's wife looked back on the city of Sodom and Gomorrah and turned into a pillar of salt, when a little girl interrupted. "My Mommy leaned back once while she was driving," she proudly announced, "and she turned into a telephone pole." In another Sunday School room, a teacher asked her class whether Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the ark. "No" a young knowledgeable boy, sighed, shaking his head boldly. "How could he? He had just two worms."
Biblical scholars are not sure who wrote the Letter to the Hebrews. Traditionally, St. Paul the Apostle was thought to be the author. It was a counterweight to his Letter to the Romans. However, since the third century this has been questioned, and the consensus today among most modern scholars is that the author is unknown.
What is clear is that the Book of Hebrews seems to have been written to a group of early Christians who had begun to doubt whether Jesus truly could be the Messiah for whom they were waiting. Many believed that the Messiah prophesied in the Hebrew Scriptures was to come as a militant king and destroy the enemies of his people. Jesus, however, came as a mere man who was arrested by the Jewish leaders and who suffered and even died under Roman crucifixion. Although he was resurrected, and this was witnessed by thousands, he still left the earth. And now his followers faced persecution rather than victory. The author turned, therefore, to the familiar characters of the Old Testament as witnesses of the faith- who believed in what they could not see.
The Book of Hebrews has a message for the Christian community even today. In spite of the foibles and failures of the world, we can trust and persevere that there will be a place waiting for us at the throne of God. We have the example of the men and women of old who lived by faith, who trusting in God's promises, and of things they could not see, ran the race that was set before them. We can learn from the example of the cloud of witnesses.

TWIN CITIES PAINT-A-THON SATURDAY, AUGUST 5 |
As part of our outreach program, LOTI is once again sponsoring a house for the annual Paint-A-Thon charity event. This is a great tradition where we paint the house of a deserving senior citizen and help keep them in their house. We need volunteers willing to help with prepping and/or painting a house located in NE Minneapolis. The main painting day is scheduled for August 5th (with August 6th as the backup day in case of rain). The prior week we will be doing prep work if that works better for your schedule.

SPEAKER SERIES ON "WORKING" |
"Working" is the theme of a new speaker series that will start this summer and run once a month through the course of the next year. It's inspired by the Studs Terkel book of that name in which "people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do." There are many people within our congregation engaged in fascinating work. This series will give us an opportunity to learn more about what they do.
The next segment of the series will be on Sunday, August 13th featuring Steve Hoyt with Hoyt Properties.
Steve has been a commercial real estate developer and investor in the Midwest for the past 40 years. His career has spanned several economic cycles and various industry trends.
His talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room for about 45 minutes. The first 15-20 minutes will be an informal talk by Steve about his work...leaving the remaining time for questions from those in attendance.
