Ford recently fired its CEO Mark Fields, seemingly out of the blue. Based on the staid, risk-averse mindset that dominates much of the U.S. auto manufacturing sector, such a move seems counter-intuitive -- especially given Fields' performance. As recently as 2015, Fields produced record profits for Ford and if that is not enough to raise eyebrows, his replacement Jim Hackett has little industry experience. Who's "at risk" in your bank?  A franchise player is usually defined as an individual whose departure to a competitor would hurt the community bank significantly.

Before I go further, a warning for those who don't think their key staffers would leave: Many of the expansion-minded banks I work with will not even consider geographic expansion without a "lift out" of a key group of franchise players from a bank already in their target market.   The threat is real.

It may be a commercial lender. It may be an IT person. It may be a strong CEO. Regardless of title, the target will generally be somebody who generates revenue for the organization. The key issue is how to retain that individual (or more often, the team). Click HERE to read more.

A vicious cybercycle: Hackers attack, banks react, hackers strike back

In banking's cash-and-coin-only days, robbers walked up to tellers, pulled out a gun and said "stick 'em up." These days, thieves can just walk up to an ATM, unarmed, and perform a digital variation you could call "stick 'em out."

Case in point: In April, a man walked up to a Russian bank automated teller machine-which started spitting out money, literally into his hands, without his touching anything.  It was caught on closed circuit video after authorities discovered hackers robbed at least eight ATMs in Russia that way and stole $800,000 in just one night.  Click HERE to read on.
