OLC BOARD SELECTS THEME FOR THE
80TH OREGON LOGGING CONFERENCE
|
|
Wanting a theme that reflects the significance of 80 years in business, the Oregon Logging Conference (OLC) Board of Directors has selected “80 Years Evergreen and Growing.”
2018 OLC President Rick Kriege said he asked the Board of Directors to come up with a theme that would celebrate OLC’s 80th anniversary, as well as the history of the logging industry.
The theme is a collaboration of OLC Director Jayme Dumford (Swanson Bros. Lumber Co, Noti, OR) and 2005 OLC Past president Bob Magathan. Dumford had suggested 80 Years Evergreen and Magathan suggested 80 Years and Growing.
Dumford said, “80 Years Evergreen represents the history of the OLC, the forest, trees, environment, and jobs that the timber industry supplies.” Magathan said, “The Oregon Logging Conference has had a significant impact on the forest industry, not only in Oregon but in the whole northwest – giving the operators a look at the latest equipment, technology, and also helping them keep current on the latest issues affecting the industry. Our conference is growing,” he continued, “and we are dedicated to keeping our forests growing and green forever. We are proud of our history and it is only fitting," he added, “that our theme is 80 Years Evergreen and Growing.”
Planning Already Underway
OLC officers, directors, and staff are working diligently on program details, such as setting up informative and thought-provoking seminar and panel topics, as well as speakers. Another state-of-the-art equipment show is also anticipated, along with some new activities being discussed.

OLC Board Member Jeff Plikat’s Family Logging Business Receives
Special Recognition
|
|
Plikat Logging was recently singled out as the Southern Oregon Operator of the Year by the Oregon Department of Forestry, and called “one of the best loggers in the state,” by a representative of the timber company on whose property the logging job was conducted for which Plikat Logging was honored.
The challenging job was on a piece of private timber land west of Drain, OR in the Brush Creek area. It was a job for Lone Rock Timber, a company with whom Plikat Logging has a long term relationship.
One of the challenges was a Class 1 fish-bearing stream, which the logs were “flown” over to avoid significant impacts. Additionally the job was downhill logging, and involved yarding logs over long distances.
The special awards given annually by the Oregon Department of Forestry are to recognize companies that prove how operators can both manage the forest and protect natural resources.
It was how Plikat Logging handled this challenging job that led Lone Rock Timber Company representative Chris Arnold to describe Plikat Logging as “one of the best loggers in the state.” He said Plikat Logging was nominated because of the difficulty of the job, their willingness to take on the challenge, and the results that show on the ground what a good job was done.
Plikat Logging is truly a family operation with Wally Plikat (Jeff’s dad) at the helm, and including his two sons, daughter, and son-in-law. Jeff is a supervisor and Terry is a contract timber faller. Daughter Stefanie runs the office at Plikat Logging, and son-in-law Steve Cummings is the side rod of the logging operations.
“Anyplace we go, we try to do a good job, “Wally Plikat said, “and we’ve accomplished a lot of tough jobs in our career.”
