Our Lady of Fatima's Fourth Apparition

Taken into custody by Portuguese authorities on 13 August, 1917 to force the children to reveal all, Our Lady's plans were delayed slightly. On Sunday the 19th, the children were grazing sheep.  At about 4 o'clock they saw the characteristic light and Our Lady appeared and said that she would come again on the 13th of September.  "Continue to say the Rosary every day", she said, and in the last month she would perform a miracle so that all may believe.  Our Lady asked to have two litters made to carry statues, for the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.  Lucia then asked for the cure of some sick people.  Our Lady said that some she will cure during the year. Then she said, "Pray, pray very much.  Make sacrifices for sinners.  Many souls go to hell, because no one is willing to help them with sacrifice."  Then she departed as she had on the other occasions.  On August 19, let us make a special prayer to ask God's mercy on the world.

WE WELCOME OUR NEW PARISH FACILITY MANAGER
Our parish welcomes Johnny Russell Christy, better known as JR, as our new parish Facility Manager!  "I was born in Texas and watched the show "Dallas" so when co-workers started calling me JR, it seemed appropriate," he laughs.
JR has lived in Greenville, SC for the past 33 years, and is "humbled that the parish is supportive of my commuting from Greenville for this position. I have so many things I'm involved with in Greenville that a move to Hendersonville just isn't timely. It's not a bad drive -  it's pretty and relaxing!!"
Being a volunteer fireman is one of the things JR is involved with in Greenville and has been for many years. He was appointed by the Governor of South Carolina to be a Commissioner on the Board of Fire Control in the Boiling Springs Fire District. "My passion is the firehouse," he smiles, "I like serving people in this way."
JR has been married for 42 years to his wife Carol, a preschool teacher, and has three grown children and three grandchildren. "My children loved being at the firehouse when they were younger," he remembers, " and now both my daughters are married to firemen and my grandchildren love the firehouse!"
JR feels God called him to Immaculate Conception. "I was looking for a new position for several months," he explains. "Then this position came open. God had a plan for me and I feel like this is where I'm supposed to be."  He finds our parish to be unique in its volunteer base. "There are so many volunteers willing to help in so many ways," he marvels. "That's so impressive!"
"I feel like my ministry to Immaculate Conception parishioners and visitors is to provide a safe, clean environment," he says. " I want people's first impression to be that the facilities look good, and are clean and welcoming, I want people to be glad to be here."
Called By The Spirit!
When the Holy Spirit speaks, Barb Morgan listens! That is how her nonprofit, Dignity Period, came to be.
While helping someone through a tough time, she became aware that food stamps cannot be used to purchase personal care items like toilet paper and feminine hygiene products.
When the Holy Spirit calls, we are compelled to action. Barb answered that call and enlisted several other women to join her. Despite her own health challenges, she is forging ahead to help women in need in Hendersonville and the surrounding areas.
Dignity Periods' goal is to provide girls and women who are homeless, low income or victims of domestic violence access to free feminine hygiene products. Dignity Period will supply products to local women's  shelters, food pantries, homeless coordinators and school counselors. A monthly distribution schedule will be set up for the agencies to come and get products. When women and girls do not have access to feminine products they may miss as many as three days of work or school. Barb Morgan believes guarding the dignity of these women is of the utmost importance. She is confident that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide this effort as Dignity Period strives to improve the circumstances of the women ti  serves. If you would like to help, contact Dignity Period - PO Box 6104 - Hendersonville, NC 28793 or DignityWNC@gmail.com.
Barb Morgan has been a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church since 2005 and has been involved in many ministries vital to the life of the parish.

Immaculate Conception Sponsors Estate Planning Workshop

On May 24th our parish sponsored an Estate Planning Workshop.  Identical sessions were held in the morning and afternoon.  Forty-six parishioners heard presentations from Jim Kelley, Director of Development for the Charlotte Diocese and Lee Mulligan a local attorney specializing in estate planning.   Attorneys Adam Shealy and Randy Romeo also spoke briefly and were available to answer questions from the audience.  Parishioner comments were positive and they were very grateful for this free opportunity to have these issues addressed.  The discussion included Planned Giving as a method of including the church, school and the Capuchin Friars in one's Estate Plan and becoming a member of Immaculate Conception's Legacy Society.  If you have included Immaculate Conception or Immaculata with a bequest in your estate plan, but not notified the diocese, please let us know.  Questions or comments can be sent to Gayden Gauthier at 828-692-6583 or GJ.GAUTHIER.12@ATT.NET. With such a positive response we plan to offer this workshop again in the future.  Thank you.
Why is the Human Heart Shaped as it Is?
"The  human heart is not shaped like a valentine heart, perfect and regular in contour; it is slightly irregular in shape as if a small piece of it were missing out of its side. That missing part may very well symbolize a piece that a spear tore out of the Universal Heart of Humanity on the Cross, but it probably symbolizes something more. It may very well mean that when God created each human heart, He kept a small sample of it in heaven, and sent the rest of it into the world of time, where it would each day learn the lesson that it could never be really happy, that it could never be really wholly in love, that it could never be really whole-hearted until it rested with the Risen Christ in an eternal Easter, until it went back to the Timeless to recover the sample which God had kept for it from all eternity."
Quotes from Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, extract from his book "Finding True Happiness", (1st First Edition)
Linen Ministry

Dear ladies of IC,

I have a "pressing " problem and am "awash" as to how to solve it. I would ask that you prayerfully consider giving some of your precious time to the linen ministry.
You may have noticed while Holy Communion is being distributed some of our Eucharistic Ministers are holding and using a white cloth, a purificator. These linens need to be laundered after each use.
We have dear ladies who have been faithfully carrying out this work for some years now and are, out of necessity, having to give it up. If we are able to share the work among more of us then we can continue this Holy Ministry without it being too much of a burden on any.
Thank you for considering this a possible blessing and grace you could be a part of for our Parish. You may call me, Agnes Schaeffer, at 828-209-8467 or e-mail ajschaeffer01@gmail.com

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ELECT NEW GRAND KNIGHT
Many thanks to our parish outgoing Grand Knight Patrick Faragher.
When Patrick moved here 6 years ago with his wife, Janet, he immediately began working with the Knights of Columbus. "Being a Knight was a part of my life for nearly 25 years then," Patrick says. "It's a big part of who I am."
"My past two years as the Grand Knight here at Immaculate Conception have been very rewarding," Patrick recalls. "The Knights are the 'go to guys' here in the parish and it's been a privilege and a joy to get to know the membership, and lead, and join them in doing really good work for our parish."
On June 8th, Patrick's term ended and Robert Zanolli was elected as the new Grand Knight.
Bob Zanolli, was raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and moved here 5 years ago from Florida with his wife, Terri, a Medical Assistant at Park Ridge in Laurel Park, and son,  Anthony, a student at Flat Rock Middle School. Bob is a Security Consultant with businesses and companies, and is eagerly looking forward to his term as the Grand Knight.
Bob has been a Knight for 15 years and first worked as the Youth Director for the Knights Council in Florida. "I really enjoyed working with the kids and families," he says, "and so this year's Knights' theme of the Domestic Church is close to my heart."
Among his goals for the next 2 years is updating the By-laws of the Council, reaching out to younger men with families, and involving the wives and families in more activities. "As the Deputy Grand Knight, I worked with membership," he explains. "I know how hard it is to have a young family, be working, and find time for things like the Knights. By having more family activities, I hope to make becoming a Knight more appealing to the younger men of the parish."
Bob credits Patrick Faragher with being a "wonderful mentor" for becoming the Grand Knight. "Patrick did a terrific job of leading our Council, and gave me some great examples of leadership," Bob says gratefully.
Bob and his wife have two other children, Emily, who works in Microbiology at the Cape Coral, Florida hospital, and Joe, a Navy hospital Corpsman.

Muchas gracias a nuestro Gran Caballero Ma yor Saliente Patrick Faragher.
